What are your favorite African American movies? I’m talking about the ones that never get old…the ones you can watch over and over without getting bored? Let me pick your brains a bit. Some of my absolute favorites may be just what you’re thinking, while the rest…you’re going to WISH you were thinking about.
Can you name your favorite, UNFORGETTABLE African American movies that still get you excited today?
1. Set It Off (1996)
Who didn’t love the “Set It Off” crew? Four beautiful African American queens played main roles as they produced nothing short of an A+ performance. Jada Pinkett-Smith, Kimberly Elise, Queen Latifah, and Vivica A. Fox. No one could show off like THEY did!
2. Pain In Full (2002)
Good ol’ Mitch and Rico! I’m sure you all got a kick out of Cam’Ron’s performance...until he really showed his a**. And lets not forget about Ace, who held it down to the very end. Sex, drugs, and money! But there’s no classic like Paid In Full. Money-Makin' Mitchhhh.
3. Love & Basketball (2000)
Sanaa Lathan ol' pretty, melanin-poppin' Queen. Who knew that such a beauty could pull off shootin' hoops. Omar Epps and Lathan were the perfect fit for this romantic-drama as they grew up as next-door neighbors, pursuing the same dream...playin' pro ball!. I bet we all can put this movie on right now and still enjoy it the same way we did when we first watched it.
4. The Wood (1999)
No one ever forgets about The Wood. This is probably one of the funniest black movies of all time. I'm talkin' about unlimited comedy! From Ro going missing before his wedding to the childhood memories they shared. What was your favorite part?
5. A Thin Line Between Love & Hate (1996)
We all know Martin Lawrence ALWAYS gives us a show no matter what movie he stars in. He plays the victim so well, while Lynn Whitfield's psychotic performance gives us all chills. What you think ladies? Would you have done it Lynn Whitfield-style?
6. Poetic Justice (1993)
Poeticcccccccc Justicccccce! Gon' head Janet and our fallen angel TuPac Shakur! The chemistry between these two was obvious. It's always amazing to look back at TuPac, his greatness, his presence. And Janet, so soft spoken, but Pac sure did manage to get her to curse him out something deadly! From the poetry to the overall storyline itself, this film never gets old.
7. The Best Man (1999)
Everyone loves The Best Man. All of our African American Kings play fantastic roles. Who remembers when Morris Chestnut found out that Taye Diggs slept with his girl in his previous life? We ALL know Terrence Howard always chimed in whenever things got serious. He kept the serious parts funny. Who can watch this part and NOT laugh? Ha!
8. Baby Boy (2001)
"You're just a baby boyyyyy. You're not the real McCoyyyyy." Who knows those lyrics? Baby Boy will always be classic with Tyrese and our Black Queen Taraji P. Henson playing the infamous roles of Jodie and Yvette! We all know Tyrese hated his mother's boyfriend Melvin, but this specific scene was funny! Tyrese tried to go so hard, and he sure did land that way!
9. Boyz N The Hood (1991)
"I'm not from Africa, I'm from Crenshaw Mafia." The most popular part of this movie. How many people can watch this over and over again like myself...and recite the lines? This had to be one of the best introductions in the history of cinema this is nothing but comedy. Boyz N The Hood will forever be a classic due to the dynamic duo of Ice Cube and Morris Chestnut! Such a chilling, violent, drama that always makes you shed a tear or two. You can't beat how real Cube kept it throughout the movie!
10. Soul Food (1997)
Let's take a moment to think about why Soul Food is a classic black drama? You done thinking let me tell why. Family-oriented, family struggles, deception, love, and guilt. This movie reveals just how real life can get everyday. So heartfelt it's always a must-watch! Let's not forget about our beautiful black Queens...Nia Long, Vivica A. Fox, Vanessa Williams.
11. Menace II Society (1993)
An old school, hood Classic! My absolute favorite! With both Larenz Tate and Tyrin Turner taking part in gangsta roles, they left an unforgettable mark. Who remembers this part? After the "unexpected" robbery occurred in the liquor store with O-Dawg and Caine? O-Dawg swore he was going to get famous off of a 211 tape, being sold online for somethin'-teen-99. Who was your favorite character? Although it is always great watching a film starring Tate, my favorite character was definitely Caine. Sucks to see him go at the end.
Now of course there are other black movies that NEVER get old, but I know that the ones listed above will hit a nerve for most of you! What are your top favorites?
