8 Things I, As A Black Girl From Arkansas, Am Tired Of Hearing
@srymae

We all have those moments when we're pushed to the edge and have to fight the urge of blowing up on someone for their comments. If we do, then we go outside of our character and potentially embarrass ourselves or even create an image that does not truly reflect who we are. Depending on the remarks from other people, it's completely fine to put them in their place. However, we cannot allow them to alter our moods in any way.

I'm not sure about anyone else but I'm tired of hearing these comments from people.

1. "Why did you rock those items together?"

I can't tell you how many times I heard this in high school. My style is uniquely mine and I don't have to explain the reasoning for swag to anyone, period. The stuff I rocked in high school later became trends that everyone tried to rock after me, but hey, it be like that sometimes.

2. "You're pretty for a dark-skinned girl"

You know this isn't a compliment right? As if there has to be a distinction between being pretty and the color of my skin. Save your "compliment" and go about your business.

3. "You're from Arkansas? I didn't know Black people lived there"

First, no slander about Arkansas will be tolerated. I only lived there for two years because I'm a military child, but that's still my hometown. And for those who don't think Black live here, did you not pay attention in history class? Does the Little Rock Nine ring any bells?

4. "Why don't you smile more?"

If you know me then you know I'm ALWAYS smiling. And my smile is pretty big (which I love) so if you see me walking around, I'm just in the zone. I'm not sad or mad--I'm just chillin'.

5. "You're too nice"

Yeah, it's true, I am nice but don't be fooled. I'm brutally honest, and I'm not afraid to call anyone out on their bullshit.

6. "I didn't think you were as smart as you are"

This takes me back to my high school days. I'm not sure if people thought everyone was supposed to be dumb or if they were just a bit slow themselves? I wonder what those people are doing with their lives now? I'm doing pretty great.

7. "Can you put me on with your homegirl?"

I won't lie, I have very attractive friends, both men, and women. But nothing gets me more tight than my homeboys asking me to put them on. We're in our 20's now, if you want her then boss up and shoot your shot.

8. "You're fake, you don't hit me up anymore"

Well, if I don't hit your phone anymore like I used to then there's a reason for it. You may need to check yourself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
