Okay, so I know that by the time this is posted it will be pretty far from Black Friday, but I feel the need to talk about this anyway. Why in the heck is Black Friday on Thanksgiving?? It doesn’t make any since. Stores are trying so hard to push sales and make all of the cash they can, people are going insane and causing fights over T.V.’s, and all the while we forget that just hours ago – literary hours – we were sitting around a table talking about how thankful we were for what we already had. Black Friday in general is just way too much, but I find it completely disgusting that it has become something so valuable in America that we skip over the one holiday that actually means something. In an effort to explain why this madness needs to stop, I’m going to mention two major reasons why Black Friday needs to stay on Friday.
Most places that do Black Friday shopping still have a large inventory by Friday. News flash, people: the stores where you do your shopping are still going to have everything that you want to buy throughout Thursday and Friday. The only store that might be an exception is Wal-Mart, and even then they have a lot of items stored up in the back to last at least most of the way through Friday. That being said, there really isn’t any need for there to be a full scale war zone in the shopping aisles. Let’s just be rational and get our things in an orderly fashion (if you don’t think that’s possible, watch the shoppers in the UK do it. It’s incredible, really).
A lot of the items that you want aren’t even on sale. This is especially true if you are shopping in the mall. It’s ridiculous, but many of the items that are marked down are items that were already on the clearance rack, or clothes and shoes that aren’t even a popular brand. The stuff that has any real value is still just as expensive as it always was. It’s like that in almost every mall store: they don’t mark down the price on those $90 acid jeans you wanted, but they got a huge sale on ugly Christmas sweaters and clothing that was about to leave the store anyway. Not saying that people wouldn’t want stuff off of the clearance rack; if that’s what you want, it’s totally fine. I just know that I’d rather get those $90 pair of pants for like…I don’t know, $30?
I’m not saying that Black Friday is completely unnecessary (although the people involved need to stop creating a war zone out of the stores), but I am saying that it needs to stay on the day it was named after. If we keep this up, we’ll be doing the Black Friday shopping on Halloween, and that’s another favorite holiday of mine that we simply cannot place this event on. Let’s just enjoy Thanksgiving holiday for what it is – being thankful.
