A lot of college students are flooding the gyms across America. The goal to get "swole" and "jacked" is prevalent in many college students. However, a new dangerous trend is sweeping the nation in an effort to lose weight quickly.
Drunkorexia is the trend where students workout intensely for a couple of hours, then practically starve themselves afterward and then go out and binge drink alcohol to reach their calorie count for the day.
As someone who is aware of how to live a healthy lifestyle, this trend sounds extremely dangerous for many reasons.
Yes, you will lose weight rapidly; however, there are an array of physical and psychological consequences. For example, drinking in a state of malnutrition can predispose individuals to a higher frequency of blackouts, alcohol poisoning, alcohol-related injury, violence or illness and in some cases death. Drinking on an empty stomach, as many college kids know, is a way to get drunk quicker. And if you are binge drinking, there is a good chance you will throw up from too much alcohol consumption. So if you're not eating and all that you've consumed is alcohol then all you are throwing up is alcohol. Eventually you run out of things to throw up... But your body will continue.
This is not safe!
Take it from me, I've lost 50 pounds since Valentine's Day. And what I've done is simply started eating healthier and controlling how much I eat. And on top of that diet, I lift weights and do some form of cardio. Whether that be running or on the StairMaster or swimming, just cardio alone helps so much to lose weight.
Weight loss and getting toned is a process. This instant gratification society we live in is dangerous in this area. So many people want to drop all this weight rapidly but that isn't how things work. You must work at it every day. Little by little the change you seek will appear. Just be disciplined to keep going. Remember the two rules of perseverance: Rule one, take one more step. Rule two, if you feel like you can't go any further refer to rule one.
Drunkorexia is dangerous. It isn't healthy and frankly it's one of the most foolish things I've ever heard. Just eat right, eat light and do cardio and weights. Just keep moving forward and stick to it; I promise it will be worth it.
