Bill Cunningham is one of the most renowned fashion photographers in the world. For several decades, Cunningham has been photographing the most intriguing street styles, publishing these trends in the New York Times.
From fresh to funky, he has captured it all from Michael Kors to the woman sitting next to him on the subway. Cunningham rarely photographs anything short of outrageous and exciting outfits including large prints, fun colors and unique pieces. Cunningham steers away from what’s on the runway, focuses instead on how it is brought to the streets in individuals’ own inspired ways. He focuses on how real women would wear the clothes, not how stick straight models sport these looks on the runway.
It’s safe to say that he is on to something. The designers’ products seen in fashion shows only sets the craze. It does not show how the looks will become significant in the every day lives of real women. He captures the unique way someone would pair two completely opposite patterns together in one outfit or an incredible pair of shoes that aren’t necessarily seen on the runway, but were found at a local thrift shop. He puts the focus on the uniqueness of each person’s personality and how their personality is caught in their daily style.
Take note -- fashion isn’t about taking an exact look from Chanel that was seen in Paris Fashion Week and wearing it to work the next day. It’s about capturing individuality and outwardly expressing that personality through the perfect combination of pieces.
