We have always been told that when you leave high school, the people you talked to everyday soon become strangers. I have been lucky enough to stay in contact with some of my best friends from high school and I know I will always have those people in life. However, college is different. You learn quickly who is willing to be there for you through your highs and your lows. You learn who values you.
I am a very social person but my circle of friends is very, very small. These are the people I know will be there for me no matter what. I don't say it enough, but I thank them for that. People will always be there to congratulate you when you're on your high, but pay close attention to those who stick beside you at your lows. I mean those who are willing to stay up with you, either in person or on the phone, when your mom is in the hospital, the ones who reach out to you when a loved one has passed away, and who send you words of affirmation when you feel like you don't amount to anything. These are the people who you should thank every single day. These are the ones who will stand beside you through anything. Hold onto them.
These people are rare to find and to the ones who have been there for me, thank you. In the last three months, I lost two people too soon, but I couldn't be strong without the love and support I have gotten from my friends and God. I value these people because I know. I know that no matter what obstacle or accomplishment I am facing, they will be there. These are the types of people you should value always.
As you grow, you learn a lot of things. The biggest lesson I have learned is that people don't always have the same heart as you. As bad as this sucks, sometimes the people you've been through hell and back for, won't be there for you. I won't say it's okay, because it's not, just don't let it change who you are. Continue to show them love. They may not appreciate you now, but you could be all that they have. Don't let someone else make you bitter.
