A Big Week In The Big Apple

I started spreading the news.

So I have officially begun my journey as an editorial intern at Odyssey. Tuesday morning, I hopped off the plane at LGA (ok not exactly like Miley, but kind of similar) with a dream and my cardigan (more like a lulu jacket but it’s ok- nobody’s perfect). Needless to say, I was ready to begin the best summer internship the next morning.

Wednesday morning, I woke up and walked into the lobby. I was the first one there... just let that sink in. We went upstairs and after a few meetings, we got a tour of the incredible building. It’s seriously an adult playground, but don’t confuse that for inefficient and unproductive. These people know how to get stuff done. We got our squads that we will be working in and played ice breakers like it was the first day of camp. We were given Odyssey t-shirts and bright orange Odyssey notebooks. We also took a walk through Madison Square Park to prove that mental health is key in any job.

To set the scene: the water is infused, the couches are huge, (this will not continue to rhyme), there is music blasting in the bathrooms, the art work is awesome and all of the coffee mugs say “Do What You Love”. So it’s not hard to believe that the rest of my days so far have been nothing less than amazing.

What I’m doing: Being an editorial intern, I am responsible for launching new communities of Odyssey at other schools. I’m excited to give a voice to those at schools who don’t already have the incredible opportunity of having Odyssey communities. I’m also responsible for editing and publishing content each week.

Five NYC tips I’ve learned this week:

Know what you want to order when you get to the counter

Unless you’ll have death stares from the people behind you.

Don’t stop in the middle of the sidewalk

If you do this you're gonna get my finger (the one in the middle). guess I already become a bit of a New Yorker because I want to physically remove those people from the sidewalk who stop to text someone back.

Don’t swipe your Metrocard too fast

I’m still not sure why every time I swipe my card it says “Error. Swipe again.” So stay tuned for next week when I debunk that reason.

Walk to the corner that is either going uptown or downtown before getting into a cab

For instance, 5th avenue runs downtown so if you want to go to Union Square from 55th street and you’re on Madison, walk to fifth.

Beware of the empty train car

Everyone keeps saying this, so I guess I’ll just keep avoiding it.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
