Here is a simple thank you to the person that made me the strongest version of myself.
Having a roommate in college is one of those mysterious things. You walk into your freshman year college experience and find out you have to live with another human being... In the same room. Depending on if you selected your roommate or went in random is a personal preference. You hear horror stories about random rooming selections, and you also hear stories about roommates that selected each other.
I cannot relate to either. My roommate was my life saver, my best friend and my sister from another mister. We both grew up with two brothers, no sisters, which for two college girls that now had to share everything, including a room, was difficult, but we made it work. Yes, there were bumps in the road, but that's normal. We became family, not only with each other but my other four roommates. Your roommate knows everything about you including your sleeping habits, your style and even your bra size. (So, get used to them knowing every single thing about you.)
Freshman year, especially, was difficult with fitting in, making friends and growing as an individual. Without my roommate, I would not have been able to be half the person I am today. I May have managed the basketball team, but she managed every tear, every complaint and every single hug I needed.
There were some days were being a roommate is the most important thing. There are moments that I've looked back and said without her, I don't know how I would have made it out of the year. Your roommate should make you a better person, push you and inspire you. There are times where being in the room is a safe haven, just wanting to spend time with your roommate after a bad day, watching a movie or just talking can be the smallest gesture to show you appreciate to one another. I have bragging rights with my roommate because she saves my life and maybe yours one day, as she studies to be a nurse. I see the struggle, the dedication and hard work she had to inquire to be where she is now. I make sure I tell everyone because as a roommate I'm proud. (She also sang the national anthem at her high school graduation, I always add that in too).
One thing a roommate must do is listen. Communication is key, and I learned that late in the game. Having a support group is what makes you a stronger person. Trusting people and allowing them to help you, is what makes a person the best version of themselves. Always remember two is better than one, and there's a reason for that, to make each other stronger.
Thank you Nix from the bottom of my heart for constantly being my rock, my therapist, my absolute best friend and finally my forever roommate.
Love Always,
The Girl In The Bed Over
