A Thank You Letter To My Big Sister

Joining a sorority is more than the socials and "paying for your friends."

A Thank You Letter To My Big Sister
Learia Shepherd

Until I joined my sorority, I had no clue what it was like to have so many sisters who love and care about you so much. From the very beginning of my process of becoming a sister of Alpha Xi Delta, I was welcomed with open arms from the one who I now call my Big. Gaining a big sister has been nothing but an extreme blessing, and I wouldn't have it any other way, so here is my thank you to her.

Dear Biggie,

From the day I met you at that awkward recruitment carnival thing, I instantly felt like we would somehow become the closest of friends. When recruitment week kicked off and I came into the Alpha Xi Delta house and had you to show me around the house and explain about everything about our chapter, I began to feel so close to you, not knowing that you would eventually have a huge impact on my life. We were so much alike. It was like I had just met another me. I could not get over the fact that you and I were both making fun of weird patterned leggings together and making connections about how many people you knew from my hometown (even though you don't live there). Bid day came around, and I received my bid from Alpha Xi Delta and came running into your arms trying to hold back tears of joy.

At that

moment I was so overwhelmed with excitement that I had no clue I was about gain 100-plus new Instagram followers, 100-plus new Instagram followers to like my pictures, 50-plus new girls I would soon call my sisters, and, most importantly, you

We began talking just about every day, realizing that we were basically the same exact person who quoted Vines on the daily, laughed at memes that probably weren't funny, and loved eating Zaxbys whenever we weren't broke. Explaining our friendship to anyone could quickly draw some confusion due to how awkwardly close we are, but you have truly become one of my best friends, and I don't know where I would be without you. You make me laugh like no one else can, you bring me up when I am down, and you even take care of me when I've had a little too much to drink on a Saturday night.

I want to thank you for being such a good friend to me and listening to all of my problems about my extremely confusing little life that I live. You always have an open ear to all of my issues, and you never hesitate to stop and ask, "Are you okay?" or ask how I'm feeling, even if your day isn't going that well. I can only imagine that picking up a little one like myself could be somewhat of a challenge, but I promise that I have tried my best to make sure I can be the good person you know me to be. Thank you for being my back bone when I am feeling broken. I know I have made some bad choices in the past, but you have never once given up on me, and I can not ever thank you enough. Big, you have made life so much easier, and you have given me a reason keep trying and not give up. Through everything I have been through, you have never failed to get me past it.

On the bright side of our crazy friendship, I can't go anywhere without someone asking "Where is your big?" or, "Why isn't Kaitlyn with you?" For everyone else to notice how close we are, and how much we are alike, it makes me never question having you as a big sister. With that being said, I want you to know that I will always be your "Lil MaLearia," even when I'm 38 years old, living across the country with nine children running around screaming. You will stay a part of my life until I can't force you to stay any more. I love you more than you will ever know, Kermit.

Love your little sassy thing,

Lil MaLearia

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
