Big Car, Small World

10 Moments drivers of massive vehicles encounter.

The Tour Bus. Big Bertha. These are two of the many nicknames of my Ford Expedition, driven by me, a 5'2" female. When people discover the model of my car, some muffle their laughter and others not so much. Can't you picture it? A tiny female driving a car whose hood she can barely see over, and the pedals she can barely reach?

Of course, I am thankful to have a car (thank you Mom and Dad!), but there are several times where the struggle of driving such a massive car is so real. These are several of the struggles those with beasts of cars must encounter.

1. Parking Garages

Simply put, parking garages are nightmares. To us, parking garages often seem like a claustrophobic cave of which we can only pray we escape without hearing the leering screech of metal against a concrete roof.

2. Attempting to park straight.

Hopefully you have an extra five minutes to tirelessly readjust your parking until you're somewhat in between the lines.

3. Small cars cutting you off.

Um, excuse me? I am a giant and you are an ant. Is it really intelligent of you to try and race in front of a vehicle three times your size? I think not.

4. Driving down narrow roads.

You can forget about driving down narrow city roads. With pot holes galore, cars parked in the street, and roads built for smart cars, it is a nightmare to navigate.

5. The cost of gas.

Can I pay with a finger? No? Maybe an arm and a leg? Can I get a scholarship for gas? Such wishful thinking, but filling up an enormous tank does burn a hole in the wallet.

6. Having to jump into the car.

Yes, I have to hop in my car. I feel like I’m ten feet off the ground, but at least I don’t need a step stool!

7. The messiness.

The great (or bad) aspect of having a large car is the amount of junk it can hold. Your car becomes your closet, your trash can, your pantry, and anything else your heart desires. Maybe you’ll find a time to clean it. Someday soon. Maybe next week…

8. Parallel Parking

I’m sorry, but what is parallel parking? You want me to do what in this beast? That’s hilarious.

9. The masculinity of the car.

In all honesty, my car is not a small, feminine car like a VW Beetle. Many people often associate large cars being driven by burly men. Clearly this is not the case for me. No matter how many cute bumper stickers I add, or what I hang from my mirror, Big Bertha will never be a size two.

10. The memories she brings with.

No matter how much you may complain about having such a hefty vehicle, it will hold many memories to come. It has been with you on countless road trips and adventures. Your bus will always be reliable and safe.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
