Why Bid Day Is The Best Day
Hannah Carnes

Sorority girls say it all the time…. Bid day is the best day! It honestly is the best day! Here are 10 facts for everyone who is curious about bid day.

1. Bid day buddies!

For every new member, they have their bid day buddy! This is the person welcoming them to our ‘Ohana! They meet the new members at the front with a cute sign and run to them with open arms! These people are also there to help guide them through their first day of being a sorority girl! Bid day buddies are there to help them introduce them to sisters, and make them feel apart of the family!

2. Yes, we have polka dots and glitter on our faces

It’s a common trend at all Bid days to put a polka dot pattern or smear glitter on your face! Don’t ask me why, but it just makes the pictures cute and honestly who doesn’t love face paint and glitter! We also paint our Greek letters on our legs or arms! Adds to the cute factor!

3. Balloon arches are a serious thing

Yes, our girls are crafty! In order to save money, the sorority that I'm in Phi Mu made our own balloon arch! At Party City they can cost up to $200 plus dollars! That’s a lot of money, so why not get a couple sisters to do it! We had about 10 sisters working on our bid day’s beautiful masterpiece!

4. Snacks are a must!

There can’t be a Bid day without snacks! For ours, we had cupcakes made by our Alumnae advisor Muffy! She has her own cupcake company 'My Sweet Diva' and made some really cute ones for our new members special day! We also had pretzels and hummus, trail mix, lemonade and our staple piece other than the cupcakes was homemade Shirley temples! Those were a hit!

5. Goodies in your goodie bags!

By now your probably thinking this is like a legit birthday party. Yes, yes it is! We have goodie bags for our new members filled with fun little gifts welcoming them to the sorority life!

6. Pictures, pictures, and more pictures!

You may think that Bid day is all staged! The “fake laughs,” “Hugging constantly,” but we are honestly having a good time! Those pictures are taken at random. We could be in mid conversation and someone says a funny joke we break out in laughter! Those are the moments we want to capture! So a couple gracious sisters are the photographers getting those candids! Pictures are the best way to remember the day!

7. Sorority squats are real

Sorority squats are a thing of course! If you’ve ever done one it’s a workout for sure! Especially when you want to get those different poses! Group pictures are long, but fun. There’s always someone telling a joke to break the long minutes of smiling! Also, posing is a big thing! Love seeing all the cute poses that girl’s come up with. Some popular ones are “the open mouth smile,” Throw what you know,”

8. Big letter balloons are necessary

On our balloon arch, we had P-H-I M-U balloons! Those big letter balloons are always perfection in pictures! They are a statement piece to any bid day!

9. Yes, we have massive Greek letters!

10. We are welcoming “home” our new members!

Yes, we call it home! Essentially we are welcoming the new members into our family. Greek life is a family and we want to welcome you with open arms, no judgment at all. We hope that by inviting you to our family you will contribute to make it better! New members equal new ideas and a home is where you essentially share your ideas and make the sorority better!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
