It is human nature to want to survive, but what happens when life feels as if it is no longer worth surviving for? Sometimes waking up feels like a nightmare, sometimes emotions become numb, sometimes darkness is all consuming, sometimes life is so burdensome that escaping it seems like the only answer.
Most therapists will tell you "suicide is a permanent answer to a temporary problem," and they are completely right; yet, for those contemplating suicide, temporary problems can drive us to the point of no return. In the desperation of needing the pain to end, nearly one million people worldwide will die as a result of suicide every year. Although the strength to continue fighting may waver, we must not lose courage. In fighting we find life, in The Word we find life.
For the times we forget we are beautifully made:
He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also He has put eternity in their hearts, except that no one can find out the work that God does from beginning to end. 12 I know that nothing is better for them than to rejoice, and to do good in their lives.
-Ecclesiastes 3:11
For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. 14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. 15 My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. 16 Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.
-Psalm 139:13
Don't you know that you yourselves are God's temple and that God's Spirit dwells in your midst?
-1 Corinthians 3:16
For broken hearts:
The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears them; he delivers them from all their troubles. The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.
-Psalm 34:18
Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
-John 14:27
For the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd; he will lead them to springs of living waters. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.
-Revelation 7:17
For when we feel alone:
Though my father and mother forsake me, the Lord will receive me. 11 Teach me your way, Lord; lead me in a straight path because of my oppressors. Do not turn me over to the desires of my foes, for false witnesses rise up against me, spouting malicious accusations. 13 I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. 14 Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.
-Psalm 27:10
Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.
-Matthew 11:28
Looking at his disciples, he said: Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. 21 Blessed are you who hunger now, for you will be satisfied. Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh. 22 Blessed are you when people hate you, when they exclude you and insult you and reject your name as evil, because of the Son of Man. 23 Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, because great is your reward in heaven. For that is how their ancestors treated the prophets.
-Luke 6:20
For when darkness is all around us:
The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
-John 1:5
Surely he will save you from the fowler’s snare and from the deadly pestilence. 4 He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart. 5 You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day, 6 nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the plague that destroys at midday. 7 A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you.
-Psalm 91:3
Be strong and of good courage, do not fear not be afraid of them: for the Lord your God, He is the One who goes with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you.
-Deuteronomy 31:6
What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? 33 Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies. 34 Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us. 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? 36 As it is written:
“For your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.”
37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
-Romans 8:31
For when we need to be reminded the past does not define us:
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come. The old has gone, the new is here!
-2 Corinthians 5:17
I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
-Philippians 4:13
But now, this is what the Lord says—he who created you, Jacob, he who formed you, Israel: “Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine."
-Isaiah 43:1
Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. 12 Then you will call upon Me and go and pray to Me, and i will listen to you. 13 And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart.
-Jeremiah 29:11
