With all of the drama in Washington this past week over the Hobby Lobby Supreme Court decision, Fox News decided to define a new voting demographic based on the obvious choice, Beyonce.
After comparing access to birth control to access to guns, Fox News’ “Outnumbered” co-host, Jesse Watters, talked about the vote that Hillary Clinton is dependent on to become president—the “single ladies.” He followed this up by saying, “Obama won single ladies by 76% last time, and made up about a quarter of the electorate. They depend on government because they're not depending on their husbands. They need contraception, health care, and they love to talk about equal pay.”
While I love Beyonce, aspire to be as fabulous as her and truly appreciate her view that girls are the ones who run the world, this nickname given to women who care about their stance in the political world and are generally engaged in issues is offensive. These women aren’t trying to be cute, so they shouldn’t be presented as such. They’re trying to get sh*t done and get what they deserve.
The quote by Watters frames women as being dependent on men. I’m sorry, but Beyonce is probably the farthest from dependent considering that the woman makes twice as much money as her husband (what up, Jay), and is essentially taking over the world. HELLO, has this guy never heard the Destiny’s Child song, “Independent Women?” Please.
Alyssa Rosenberg at the Post makes a beautiful point. If Beyonce’s music is any indication of what it means to be a “Beyonce voter,” then those women must be pretty bada*s. She said “[in] a demographic inspired by Knowles-Carter, girls run the world, and getting their votes will require Democrats and Republicans alike to acknowledge that." Yasssss.
It’s been a long time since Beyonce was singing about “Bills Bills Bills.” As a solo-artist and superstar songstress, Queen Bey continually reinforces the idea that a woman relies on herself but believes that marriage is important and there should be equality between men and women.
Maybe these so-called Beyonce Voters are out there. They’re “Grown Women” who don’t need husbands or handouts to be won over. They want the important issues like income inequality and health care to be addressed and acknowledged. Don’t like it? Tough. We still run the world. #BeyonceForPresident
