I’ve been driving for awhile. Now, I’m not the greatest driver, but I’m not bad either. I would say I’m good, or at least decent. Over the years, there are a few things that just get under my skin that drivers do. Here are some that are listed below.
When you are driving too fast for road conditions.
Living in Wisconsin, this is probably one of my top pet peeves while driving. Yes, I want to get home just as much as you do, but unlike you, I will be driving carefully on the road. Just because you can go 70 mph doesn't mean you should. You can cause an accident by going too fast in bad weather. If you can into an accident, it may not just affect you, but it might affect the drivers around you.
And clean off your car. Take five minutes to clean off your car so you can see better. This is another way that you can cause an accident because you didn't want to spend the extra few minutes cleaning off your car.
Not knowing how to use a blinker.
A blinker is a device in a vehicle that lets people know what direction you're going. The only reason why you shouldn't be using a blinker is when you're going straight. I can't read your mind. I don't know what direction you're going. That's why you use your blinker to give the driver's behind you a notice.
Second, if you get into a turning lane then turn your blinker on, what's the point? I now know which way you're going. You should have turned your blinker on about a few feet back before you even got into the turning lane. That would have been really helpful. Not you turning your blinker on after you're already in the turning lane.
Leaving high beams on at night.
I like using high beams at night just like everyone else. They help me see better at night, but unlike some people, I turn them off when I see a car coming from the other side of the road. If you leave your high beams on as you're coming towards me, you're blinding me just so you can see better. So, remember that you turned them on, and be ready to turn them on until the cars have passed. And not at the last minute either.
The left lane is for passing. If you're not passing, stay in the right lane.
Some people just stay in the left lane when they're not even passing someone. If you're not passing someone, or have to get over to a turning lane/exit that is on the left, then stay in the right lane so people won't have to use the right lane to pass people in the left.
Also, if you're going to pass someone on a two-lane street, be safe about it. Don't pass more than one car at a time.
Passing people then takes an exit.
What was the point? If you're taking an exit in a mile or less then it's not worth it.
Being on the phone while driving.
Get off the phone! It only takes one second to get into an accident. If you need to answer a text or call, have someone else do it for you, or pull over to the side of the road.
Don't tailgate.
Get off my bumper. This isn't going to make me go any faster, and this isn't going to get you to where you need to go any faster. Plus, what if I suddenly have to stop for some reason. Hope you have good insurance.
Inconsistent speed.
Pick a speed and stick with it. Use cruise control. Something.
Overall, just be a considerate driver. Pay attention to other drivers around you. Drive carefully in both good and bad weather. Mistakes will happen, and I understand that. I hope that you will too. You never know what's going on. If something happens, try not to be so quick to give them the middle finger, and if you make a mistake and can apologize, please do so. If someone does an act of kindness on the road, and you can thank them, please do. Whether that's with your mouth or a hand wave. Something.
