9 Of The Best Things To Do With Friends in NYC

One of the best parts about Marist is its prime location in the Hudson Valley -- not only because the scenery is unreal in the fall, but because it's close enough to New York City for an easy commute, whether you're interning, working or just visiting for the day. But in such a big city, one can easily feel overwhelmed by all the different scenes and offerings, so to make it easier, our group of Odyssey writers here at Marist compiled our own little list of some of our favorite things to do with your friends when exploring the Big Apple (in no particular order).

1. Spend time in the parks and markets

"I love wandering through all the parks, personally. It's always so nice to take a break from the busy city and roam around some green space without feeling like you have to walk in crazy zigzags to get out of people's way (like you do on the streets). I also love Chelsea Market but that's usually a bit more crowded." - Megan McCormack

2. Go to Broadway (and see a show)

"If you're looking for a night on a town, seeing a Broadway show is the way to go. There are shows for every type of person: from the rom-com to the intense drama to the classics. It is also a good way to be amazed with singing and dancing." - Jay Silver

3. Eat at one of the many pizza joints (but try Don Antonio first)

"Don Antonio by Starita at 309 West 50th is the BEST pizza you will ever eat! If you are seeing a show in that area, definitely stop by and grab a personal marguerita pizza. The crust is fluffy, the cheese is gooey, and you will 100% eat the entire 11" pizza by yourself. So delicious." - Tess Carcaldi

4. Stop by Bryant Park

"Bryant park is my favorite place in the city. The little shops are so cute, and the popular ones stay for a while. I have gotten cool room decorations, accessories, and food there. At Christmas time, it is all decorated and has a nice tree. Plus, in the winter, you can ice skate! It's a great little place to walk around, and right near the New York Public Library as well." - Amanda Bagala

5. Try out a bus tour

"Honestly, embrace your inner tourist and go on one of those double-decker bus tours. It's an interesting way to see the city, plus you can get on and off wherever your bus line goes!" - Alexa Vuillemot

6. Check out Eataly!

"Eataly!!!!!!!! best gelato ever and everyone there is so nice and very informed with the italian culture which is really cool to learn about, there's also a nutella bar inside and a homemade pasta station." - Emily Sommer

7. Q subway station on 72nd and 2nd (but actually)

"Definitely go to the Q subway station on 72nd st and 2nd ave because it has beautiful tile mosaics." - Tierney Riccitelli

8. And enjoy the random and irreplaceable performances of the city that never sleeps

"Washington square park! There are always super cool performers there (especially by the fountain) and the Union Square farmer's market is super close by. Also, Smorgasburg gets honorable mention, though it's in Brooklyn and seasonal." - Olivia Whitmer

9. Go shopping on 5th Ave and SoHo!

- Camille Chambliss

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
