This fall semester I had the pleasure of meeting two friends from the Netherlands. I never expected for them to become my best friends, but it happened in a little bit under a week. I have had such amazing experiences with them that I never in a million years thought i'd be able to have. Here are only some of the amazing things I love about having European friends:
1. You learn a lot. You learn about their language, culture, food, party-scene, slangs, everything. They will teach you so much about their part of the world, just by even being around them.
2. You teach them a lot too. It’s so much fun telling them facts and interesting things about America. (They think a lot of things in America are so cool)
3. You can tease them when they can’t pronounce an English word… for example.. try asking a dutch person to say the number “three”…. they only can say “tree”.. it’s pretty great.
4. Since they are only here for a short while, they are always looking to have a good time.
5. It’s nice to escape from Americans for a while. We tend to get so caught up in our plans and schedules, whereas Europeans tend to go with the flow..
6. You learn a lot about yourself. When you’re talking to someone who doesn’t understand English and American culture you have to explain things that you didn’t even realize you knew how to explain.
7. You can always make fun of their accents.
8. You’ll have someone to visit outside of the country.
9. You’ll have someone to Skype with now.
10. You’re introduced to so many new things and topics.
11. Like new music.
12. Cooking american food for them and having them cook their food for you.
13. Deciding you’re moving to Europe to be with them
14. You can talk for hours about everything and anything
15. You’ll never be bored with them, there’s always something to do
16. They love doing “sports” together… and by “sports” they mean working out
17. They love to “make party”
18. They call snowmobiles “snow scooters”
19. THEY LOVE HUGS, every time they see you they give you a hug, and every time you say goodbye you get a hug too, it’s beautiful
20. Lastly, they make you feel so great about yourself. Everybody loves everybody and everybody is welcome.
Making friends with the internationals is one of the best things that’s ever happened to me. I don’t know what i’d do without you guys. If you don’t have any European friends, you should get some right now so you can have as much fun as I do.
