If it wasn't obvious from my Classic Rock article, one thing I really love is giving music suggestions. (However, I'm not so great at taking them.) And one thing I love more than suggesting music is suggesting sad music. Personally, this time of year is always hard and therefore perfect for a sad/nostalgic music playlist, so let's get started!
While this song isn't exactly sad, it stirs up feelings and makes you feel nostalgic for a time where things were infinitely better.
Something about this song just pulls at your heartstrings, especially if you're from a small town like I am and can really relate to the lyrics.
3. "What I Have Left" - Mike Bones
This was my favorite song at a bad point in my life, so it may not have the same effect on others that it does on me now, but it's still a pretty good song. (Also, anyone that's seen "Nowhere Boy", this song was in the trailer.)
You can't have a sad playlist without "Sea of Love", honestly.
5. "Home" - Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros
With all the pretentious indie people I knew, this song became a staple on playlists and mixtapes. It really stirs up a feeling of nostalgia and love inside of you, but in a good way.
6. "The Trial of the Century" - French Kicks
The desperation in this song, especially towards the end always, always gets me.
7. "Tickle Me Pink" - Johnny Flynn
I don't know if anyone else will think this song is as sad as I do, but I'm putting it on here anyway.
8. "Heart Swells / Pacific Daylight Time" - Los Campesinos!
This might just be another song that I have strong memories attached to, but it will really get you in your feelings.
9. "America" - Simon & Garfunkel
This song simultaneously makes you want to travel and cry at the same time. Also, shout out to the "Almost Famous" scene.
10. "A Drop in the Ocean" - Ron Pope
Most people I know think this is a happy song, but I think it's so nice, it makes you want to cry.
11. "Tears Dry on Their Own" - Amy Winehouse
After Amy Winehouse died in 2011, I bought "Back to Black" and got obsessed. While this isn't as sad as "Back to Black," "Valerie," or even "Rehab," this song always gets me feeling some type of way.
12. "Don't Think Twice It's Alright" - Bob Dylan
If you want nostalgia, this is it.
13. "To Build a Home" - The Cinematic Orchestra
Hands down, this is one of the saddest songs in existence.
14. "Almost Lover" - A Fine Frenzy
Alison Sudol makes you feel like you're going through a breakup that you haven't even experienced yet.
15. Your choice
If you've gone through this entire list, think about the saddest song you can and then listen to and weep.
