After a long week of school, I make a two-hour drive back home to a little town in Eastern Arkansas. While I enjoy school and being around oodles of people who are my age, I also like spending time at home whenever there’s a chance. It’s my escape from the hustle and bustle of college and the city that encompasses it. Plus, there’s never any traffic in a little town like mine. I often find myself missing these parts of home while I'm stuck at college for the week, but that just makes the drive home that much more rewarding. Here are a list of things that I miss the most when I'm away at college - I'm sure you can relate.
1. My Bedroom
Coming home to a bedroom that I don’t have to share with someone is the best. I love my roommate and enjoy living with her, but being able to come home and be in a room that I have all to myself is relaxing. At home, there’s no tip-toeing around and the need to be quiet so that I don’t wake my roommate after she goes to bed. Plus, I get to sleep on my own bed and who doesn’t love that?
2. My Bathroom
Coming home to my own bathroom is a blessing. I don’t have to carry my shampoo and clothes down the hall with me just to shower. I don’t have to shower in flip flops. I don’t even have to take a shower if I don’t want. That’s right, I can take a nice bubble bath instead.
3. My Dog
Who doesn’t like coming home to their loving animals who have probably missed us more than we’ve missed them? My dog is the sweetest little critter out there, although she isn’t really that small. She’s more like 60 pounds of love and she thinks she’s a lap dog, but that’s the best part. As soon as she hears me coming up the driveway after being gone all week, she’s barking and wagging her tail waiting for me to get out and pet her.
4. My Family
I think my parents get more excited for me to come home than my chunky little dog does, even if I do come home every weekend. My mom is always calling to check on me as the weekend gets closer to see when and what time I’ll be home. My dad always expects a hug, while my little brother’s main concern is when I’ll be free to play video games with him. Being home also means that I get to visit with my grandparents, too.
5. My Boyfriend
Coming home also means that I get to see my wonderful boyfriend. Not everyone has a significant other to go home to, but I find that many people do. Even if you don’t, there’s probably someone special that you look forward to seeing when there’s a chance.
6. Hometown Friends
Seeing hometown friends after a long week at school always makes for a good time. While many of my friends are off in college, a few of them come home just as much as I do. This just means that we get to hang out more than what we would if we had to try and plan a day to get together.
7. My Church
Having the opportunity to go to my own church on a Sunday morning is wonderful. I’m not the type of person to go out and try new things or hunt for a new place that I feel comfortable, so my home church is pretty important to me. Plus, going and seeing so many familiar faces just brightens my day and allows my week to start off on a positive note.
8. My Couch
There’s nothing quite like getting to lay down and take a nap on my couch. It’s literally the perfect place to sleep during the day. My mom hates the fact that I sleep on the couch, but it’s not like I have a couch at school to go plop down on and nap. Couch naps are a necessity at home.
9. Home-Cooked Meals
It doesn’t matter what restaurants I try or what’s on the menu in the cafeteria at school, nothing compares to a home-cooked meal. Whether I’m eating my mom’s cooking or my grandma’s cooking, each bite is like a piece of Heaven. If I’m lucky, I get to pick what my mom cooks for dinner once or twice while I’m home.
10. High School Sports
Why not go to a high school ball game if there’s a chance? I love coming home just in time to throw on a ball cap and hoodie to go sit in the bleachers with the crowd. There’s not a sport that I don’t miss. Football, basketball, baseball or softball; you name it. If I can make it to the game, I’m there.
11. My Wal-Mart
Yes, my Wal-Mart. That might be a weird thing to like, but we all know that every Wal-Mart is set up differently. Going into an unfamiliar Wal-Mart is basically the same as walking into a maze. If you don’t know what you’re doing or where you’re going, it’s going to take a while to find what you need. I know where everything in my Wal-Mart is and it makes life easier.
