After taking one film studies course during my sophomore year of college, I essentially thought of myself as an expert film critic. Although I am anything but, I believe that Netflix offers a wide selection of exceptional and contrasting movies for only $7.99-$11.99 month.
"All Good Things" 2010 - Thriller/Drama
A romantic, thriller film which also happens to be my favorite movie of all time. It stars Ryan Gosling and Kirsten Dunst; two well-known performers who play their parts perfectly — a sweet, aspiring doctor and an abusive creep, who is seriously disturbed. It begins as a strong love story that anyone would wish for, and soon turns into a twisted thriller in which David puts his wife Katie through absolute hell for the sole reason that he is broken by his abnormal childhood. Viewers could never suspect the events that occur throughout the film. Best part is, it is all based on the true events of Robert and Katie Durst, and the events of a certain character’s disappearance
"The Painted Veil" 2006 - Drama/Romance
This film takes place in the 1920s, but involves a timeless and appreciable love story like I have never heard before. It involves a married couple who has fallen out of love due to the adultery which the young woman, Kitty has committed. Out of anger, Kitty’s husband and scientist, Walter offers the ultimatum that they either go through a divorce that will reveal her true colors, or travel with her husband to China to help him treat those fighting a Cholera epidemic. This threat to Kitty serves as pure punishment, considering his wife will most likely catch the infection and die. The couple is faced with dangerous and unfamiliar circumstances that left me gazing at the television for hours. I will let you discover the ending for yourselves.
"Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About His Father" 2008 - Crime Film/Drama Film
A truly emotional documentary, for those who need a good cry. This homemade film was dedicated to baby Zachary, the son of an admirable doctor by the name of Andrew Bagby. Andrew was shot dead by his pregnant girlfriend in the park after trying to avoid her deranged behaviors. When the murderer birthed Andrew’s child, beloved family members and friends reached out to commemorate him in order to teach his son, Zachary about his father. Midway through the production of the film, the plot takes a sickening turn. Causing even more emotional trauma to Zachary and Andrew’s loved ones. This tear-jerker touches the hearts of all viewers since it involves the true events of a devastated family.
"Little Boy" 2015 - Drama/Comedy
This heartwarming film is thought to reference to the atomic bomb dropped over Hiroshima during World War II. However, the story revolves around a little boy, Pepper and his father who is sent away to fight the Japanese. During the boy’s time without his father, Pepper is introduced to a Japanese man named Hashimoto, who he immediately hates merely because his father is in a war against people like him. This dark plot is turned into a witty story through the relationship of Pepper and Hashimoto. The little boy comes to a grand realization when he discovers his father has died in action. With the events that occur throughout the film, viewers will feel as if they are riding an emotional roller coaster just as I did. After watching this top-rated Netflix movie, it will also be noted that this plot is not as mournful as it seems.
"Lovelace" 2013 - Drama/Biography
This film highlights the glamorous, yet dangerous lifestyle behind the porn industry in the 1970’s. Though it may sound humorous, I have watched this film several times because it intrigues me to know how painful Linda Boreman’s life was after her X-rated adult film “Deep Throat” was released. She was named “Linda Lovelace” by her abusive husband who acted as her manager and collected all of her income, leaving her with nothing but bruises. This biography highlights the story behind a strong, young women who speaks out years after her trauma in order to motivate others in the same situation as she was in. It definitely makes you think twice about the misfortunes that "actresses" undergo behind the camera.
