What is it about energy efficient homes that makes everybody wish to have one? There are several valid reasons. First of all, you are reducing your carbon footprint and conserving the environment. Secondly, such homes are low maintenance when talking about utility costs. Finally, the green improvements aren't that difficult to pull off. Without further ado, here are some small and big things you could do so as to save more energy
Landscaping
Let's start with the less obvious first. Planting a tree (or more) in your garden, or even keeping it in presentable state has an influence on the heating of your home. You can sense the difference between hot asphalt and cool nature very well in summer, can't you? The same applies to your home. A tree giving proper shade can lower the walls' temperature significantly. True, it's not a quick fix, but its benefits are incredible in the long run.
Lighting
If you haven't already replaced all your light bulbs with LED or CFL ones, it's high time you did it. Admittedly, they seem costly at the beginning, but they will certainly pay off soon enough. On a national level, this equals billions. Also, consider motions sensors for lights outside your house. There is no need for them to be on all night long. Isn't it more logical for them to turn on only in a case of a movement?
Thermostat
An incredible little gadget that has made our lives so much easier. Now, it is possible to set the temperature on your own, and even switch everything off by a simple click. Amazingly, by reducing the room temperature for just one degree, you are already saving money.
Even better, smart homes are extremely energy saving. If you can install the system which will enable you to turn on the heating while you're commuting, for example, you are looking at even smaller bills.
Doors
There are two types of doors that are most important in this respect: front and garage.
Not only does a high quality front door look nice, but it is better insulated and doesn't let the heat or coolness escape. The same goes for the garage door. It's not there just to protect your car, but your home from wasting its precious energy. In addition, the latest modern models come in various designs and colours, so you will definitely find one for your home makeover.
Insulation
There are several ways in which you can tackle this task.
For example, you can consider insulating the attic floor. This part of the house is usually overseen, but a hot ceiling plays a big role in the overall house temperature. Of course, it would be ideal to insulate all the walls properly.
Another suggestion would be to replace the windows altogether. However, if this is too costly at the moment, the least you could do is some DIY caulking and weather stripping. Do it around the windows, but don't forget the door leading to the garage. Even with excellent insulation, the temperature is still lower in this part of your home, so why waste energy when you don't have to.
Appliances
New is always better, or at least in this respect. Old dishwashers, fridges and washing machines drain a lot of energy since they weren't constructed with energy saving as one of their primary goals. Hence, invest in brand new appliances.
Unplug (and unwind)
Though it is a simple trick, it gives results. Taking out your charger doesn't seem like a big deal. Nevertheless, think how many chargers there are in your home, lying around plugged in for nothing. Create a habit of taking them out of the sockets, or if you own a smart home, you can even switch off all the sockets which you prefer, thus eliminating reckless waste created by the above mentioned appliances.
The best thing about the fight for energy efficiency is that there is something for everyone. It doesn't matter what your budget or your inclinations are, you can always find some way to save more energy/money/the planet. Apply some of our suggestions, and you'll soon begin to feel the difference.
