I will stand by this until my last day: my best friend is my soulmate. Years ago, like many people, I believed that one's soulmate was the person they would marry, the one they would spend the rest of their life with. A couple years ago I came across a "Sex and the City" quote: "Maybe we can be each other's soulmates and then we can let men be just these great, nice guys to have fun with."
After reading that, I thought long and hard about my best friend and our life together. We have been through everything together, and I mean everything. Being best friends for nearly 13 years has helped us to understand each other when no one else does. After spending so long together, I cannot imagine a world without her in it. Who's to say that we won't end up spending our whole life together, as best friends? I strongly believe that we will.
As I stated before, there is no one else who understands me like she does. I do not ever have to explain my feelings, because she knows exactly what I am feeling before I even feel it. We know each other better than our own mothers know us (sorry mama). I can order her meals at every restaurant, I could tell you what she eats for breakfast in the morning, and she could do the same for me. We may not always like to hear the advice we receive from one another, but we remember that the we only have our best interests at heart (and that she is probably right). Even when she does not take my advice and ends up feeling sad, I would never look at her and say I told you so.
We can make each other laugh like no other. She is the funniest person I know and she thoroughly understands my sense of humor. There is not a day that goes by where we are not laughing together about something. Although we live together and see each other every day, we never get tired of being together.
Having a best friend like this helps me realize what I someday will want in a husband. I want everything my best friend and I have, along with the other parts of marriage that you're supposed to have. The person I will marry needs to be my other best friend as well. I want them to be able to make me laugh and know what to order me at every restaurant. They should eventually know me better than I know myself, just as my best friend does.
Someday when my soulmate gets married, her parents will give her away to a guy who I know will be awesome (because he had to get my approval first, obviously). But it will also feel like I'm giving her away too. After she's married she'll be someone else's best friend, she will live with someone else, and someone else will order her food. All of these are inevitable and some things will change, but one thing will never change: she is my soulmate, forever and always.
If neither of us have figured out that whole marriage thing by the time we're forty then we'll just marry each other and adopt lots of babies and live an awesome life. Much love to you, Lou.
