7 Signs That Your Boyfriend Actually Happens To Be Your Best Friend, Too
Mikala Mays

My boyfriend and I have been dating for almost two years and he is my best friend. Now, don't get me wrong–I haven't dropped all my other friends just to say that my boyfriend is my best friend. I have a female best friend, but it's a different kind of friendship. The bonds are very different but very special in their own ways. Anyway, my boyfriend is my best friend. And having my boyfriend as my best friend has plenty more pros than cons.

1. There is no pressure to impress one another.

Don't get me wrong—I still want to look good for my guy, but I also want to feel comfortable with him. That means there will be days that we just lounge around in sweats all day watching movies and throwing in a kiss every so often.

2. You have someone to tell all your drama to without risk of blabbing.

Sometimes, you just get really irritated with your friends and need someone to rant to. When your boyfriend is your best friend, you can tell him all the drama that's going on. If he is anything like my boyfriend, he's probably too busy playing video games to pay attention to what you're saying in the first place, so he won't blab.

3. You know they are "the one".

Growing up, my mom always made sure that I understood that before you marry someone, they should be your best friend. I agree with that completely. Because of that, when you have finally gotten to the point in your relationship when you're each other's best friend and really mean it, you can just know that they are "the one". You can spend forever with them and it'll be OK.

4. You can never stay mad at one another.

Have you ever really stayed mad at your best friend for more than a day? I haven't and my boyfriend is no exception. Half the time, arguments end with “you're so cute when you're mad" and lots of kisses until all is forgiven.

5. You can be yourself.

The start of relationships are always so awkward. You're always trying to impress one another, never letting the other see your flaws. Once you hit the best friend stage in your relationship, you will let them see you scream at the top of your lungs over a bad play in sports or you'll show your competitive side when playing video games. You can ugly cry or snort when you laugh and it's all OK because you're best friends and that's how best friends are.

6. His family is your family.

When you have finally gotten to that completely comfortable part of your relationship, your relationship with his family just starts to blossom. Laughing and joking with them just naturally happens. Getting your own food and drink is normal, and going to your boyfriend's house without him there is totally allowed.

7. “Normal” photos aren’t a thing.

At the start, all the pictures are cute and loving. Once you get to the best friend stage–the comfortable stage–there is no such thing as a normal picture. They are either pictures of someone sleeping, an ugly face, or just something unflattering. AND YOU DON'T CARE.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.
