To My Best Friend On Her Birthday

To the girl that I didn't know two years ago to my now best friend.

To My Best Friend On Her Birthday

As a senior in high school, I was not only worried about which college to choose, but I also was scared to have to share a room with someone. After numerous, failed Facebook conversations with girls to find a roommate I actually thought I would be living alone. I decided to apply to Indiana University on a whim and after getting accepted I was given information about an application to help find a roommate.

I downloaded the app, made my profile and started searching for people that I could potentially live with. There was a feature on the app where I could search by my major, Spanish and Secondary Education, to see if there were any possible matches. Low and behold there were two people, one guy, and one girl. I clicked on the girl’s profile and her introduction seemed normal so I thought hey, I might as well message her. After many messages back and forth we both decided to meet for coffee to make sure neither of us were complete psychos. A few weeks later, this girl told me that she was deciding between Indiana and U of I and so was I. Luckily, we both decided to attend U of I and made the decision to become roommates. Little did I know that two years later this girl, Emily Boehm, would become my study buddy, therapist and most of all best friend.

Em, there will never be enough words for me to tell you how much you mean to me and how much I truly value our friendship, but I hope this letter will show you a portion of my appreciation towards you. Whenever I need homework help (which is usually everyday) you are always willing to help me, whenever I am upset about something you are always there to talk, whenever I need to vent about something you are always there to meet with me and talk me through it. Most importantly you are there for me whenever I need you and for that I am forever grateful.

Since we are both in different sororities we unfortunately do not live together, but it has made me realize what a wonderful roommate and friend you were last year. I will be honest, without you I probably would have dropped out of U of I because I had such a hard time adjusting. Anytime I was having a hard time you were there to cheer me up, bring my starbucks or just sit with me while I was crying. We have made so many memories already and I cannot wait to make even more memories in the many more years to come.

I am so glad that I found you through the Indiana app two years ago because you have forever changed my life and made me a better person. Thank you for not turning out to be a psycho. Thank you for being my best friend. Thank you for being you. I truly could not have asked for a better person to take on college with.

Lastly, happiest of birthdays to you. No longer a teenager, wooo! You deserve to have the best day ever, followed by an even better year. Can’t wait to celebrate!

Love you tons eboehm3,

P.S. No one got you a cat for your birthday, sorry to break the news to you.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
