Friends. According to Dictionary.com, a “friend” is, “a person attached to another by feelings of affection or personal regard.” Sure, some of us have more friends than others, but there’s always that ONE person you go to, no matter what. Often times, we call that one, special person our best friend. Obviously, best friends are more than just someone we’re attached to by feelings of “personal regard.” I know for me, at least, that my best friend is my go-to, my partner in crime and the sister I never had. She can fit so many identities at once it makes me wonder if she’s actually Supergirl.
For most of us, we meet our best friends while we’re growing up. I was lucky enough to meet mine in the fifth grade. All throughout middle school and high school we remained best friends. Through the hormones, drama, break-ups and everything else associated with growing up, our friendship not only survived, but grew. Over the years we’ve discovered both our strengths and our weaknesses. We also learned to respect our differences and embrace our similarities.
For instance, we both tend to tackle tough situations differently, but those differences usually complement each other. She’s always there to talk me through something if I’m being irrational or naïve, or to make me laugh when I’m ready to cry. In fact, I don’t think that there’s ever been a time when she hasn’t been there to listen to me talk, cry, yell, etc. My best friend is without a doubt one of the most reliable women I’ve ever met.
Of course our honesty with each other has to be admirable if we’ve remained friends this long, right? Well, not only are we honest, but we’re brutally honest with each other. We never sugar coat anything, we just say it how it is. Here and there, we’ve had our fall outs, but in the end, we know it’s only because we have each other’s best interests at heart.
Another reason why I love my best friend is because we can understand each other without speaking. Whenever something amusing, weird, or just plain awkward happens and it’s an inappropriate time to laugh, we just shoot each other a look and seem to know exactly what the other is thinking.
My best friend is my best friend for countless reasons. She’s reliable, genuine, humorous, caring, fun, trustworthy, smart and so much more. She fulfils and exceeds every expectation anyone could ever ask for in a friendship.
My best friend rocks.
