10 Cooking Shows That Make You Want To Become A Professional Chef

In This Article:

Cooking shows make up a large portion of what I watch regularly. I am nowhere near a professional chef, but when I watch cooking shows, I feel like I could be. I've learned terms like julienne (a style of cutting ingredients), bain marie (a "water bath" for cooking things more evenly), and mise en place (preparing ingredients before cooking). I know all about flavor combinations. When I sit on my couch, I think to myself, "I could totally do that," even though I probably couldn't. I'm no professional, but it's nice to dream. Here are my favorite shows if you want to be inspired too!

1. The Great British Baking Show

Giphy

This is the best cooking show there is, no contest. With the accents and the British jargon, it really makes cooking seem easy. If you haven't seen it, go watch it on Netflix right now!

2. Chopped

Giphy

Although I have never had to cook in a high-pressure environment like the Chopped kitchen, I have no problem critiquing the contestants on their dishes. Watch a few episodes and feel like an expert!

3. Masterchef Junior

Giphy

This one makes you encouraged and discouraged all at once. On one hand, they're kids, so it can't be that difficult. On the other hand, THEY'RE KIDS and they've cooked things you could only dream of making.

4. Barefoot Contessa

Giphy

Everything seems so simple when Ina Garten says it. Can't get fresh spices from the farmers market? Store-bought will do. Can't raise your own chickens? Eggs from the store will work fine.

5. Worst Cooks in America

Giphy

Aside from all the cringing and wondering, "Are these people really THAT bad at cooking?" you do feel more accomplished when you watch this. At least you know that a spatula is not a knife, right?

6. Cutthroat Kitchen

Giphy

What's more fun than sabotage? Watching cooks give each other different punishments that force them to cook with a tiny kitchen or go dumpster diving for ingredients makes me want to join in on the fun!

7. Kids Baking Championship

Giphy

Nothing motivates you to get cooking like kid chefs who can do things better than you. The things these kids create will definitely blow you away!

8. Everyday Italian

Giphy

I always loved watching this show growing up. Giada has a way of explaining a recipe that makes you feel like you're learning the secrets of Italian cuisine.

9. Chopped Junior

Giphy

Like Chopped, but with kiddos! If they can turn four random ingredients into a complete entree, I can too, right?

10. Good Eats

Giphy

This show mixes science with cooking. For those of you who want to know WHY food cooks a certain way, Alton Brown will make you an expert in no time!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
