For almost 100 years, fans of the Georgia Bulldogs and the Florida Gators have come together for one of the most exciting football games of the year. Located in the neutral city Jacksonville, Florida, this rivalrous game has brought forced together two of the strongest fan bases and Southeastern Conference powerhouses in college football. Nothing can compare to the rivalry game that takes place Saturday night, except maybe the event that takes place the day before just an hour north of Jacksonville.
Frat Beach is both a massive location and event. Coordinated by the students of the University of Georgia, this unofficial party takes place on the eve of every Florida-Georgia games each year. Held on St. Simons Island, Georgia, Dawg fans set up camp and throw one of the biggest parties in the nation. Students line up for over a mile of the beautiful Georgia coast with lots of booze, babes and Bulldogs. The name of this event is classified by the high volume of Greek students that participate in this school tradition.
The Frat Beach schedule looks like this:
Thursday
Most students leave Athens Thursday evening to check into their St. Simons hotels and condos. Most condos sleep about half of the people that actually crash there, but its an easy way to save a few bucks for these broke college students. That night they load up on beer and liquor and usually hang out in low key locations before the debauchery of the next day.
Friday
Late Friday morning, the Dawgs awaken and swarms of red and black storm the beach with chairs, tables, coolers, kegs and, of course, their closest friends. This is day-drinking at its finest and to the maximum. An average walkthrough of Frat Beach around 2 p.m. would reveal sights of: keg stands, beer bongs, frat tanks, fanny packs, "chug jugs," beer pong, Greek letters and about a million people yelling "Go Dawgs!" in traditional Southern fashion. Practically no orange and blue is to be found and they like it that way.
Things begin to wind down around 4 p.m. At 5 p.m., all students are kicked off the beach for cleanup and safety purposes. That night is reserved for dinner plans, small parties and lots of sleeping away a day of drinking before the next day brings on even more alcohol and fun.
Saturday
Gameday, baby! Fraternities rent out charter busses and charge an all-inclusive shuttle to and from Jacksonville on game day.
The beauty of Frat Beach remains in the timing. Since South Georgia is generally still warm during the fall game, Dawg fans have a chance to show the nation that they can still live it up in the sun. It is also a chance to amp up the adrenaline and excitement for the game the next day. Everyone is in the best of spirits since the game has not started. If this were a post-game party, it would be pity party a little less than half the time (based on the hundred year record). But, because UGA students to choose to ditch class and throw one of the largest parties in the nation the day before, there is no sad face to be seen. Well played, UGA, well played.
