So, I go to what is probably the most hipster art school on the entire planet, which tends to lead to a preference towards the more independent places for choices of study and other art-related activities. Also, sometimes Starbucks and the library can just drive you insane. Thus, leads to a magical time where one goes to Google Maps and searches for the one thing that could provide the only things that can get homework done (or at least help you reach post limit on Tumblr): Caffeine and not being directly on-campus. What would be the ideal option for this? Outpost Bar and Café in Fort Greene.
First, it’s near Pratt. At about a 15 minute walk, getting there hardly requires any effort, and it’s gorgeous on a nice day, being surrounded by the brownstones of Clinton Hill. What makes it especially unique, though, is the fact that it’s just far away enough from Pratt that a student will not feel like they’re being stifled by the atmosphere of their dear school, making it a win-win for bored college students desperate to escape the hell that is living at school.
Second of all is the coffee. It’s delicious. They have the typical coffee-shop fair; mochas, espressos, lattes, but they also have a drink menu full of different concoctions named after the nearby streets. From the Downing, a drink made with two shots of espresso, chocolate syrup, and raspberry syrup to the St. James Place (made with peanut butter and chocolate), the place is full of creative, delicious options that easily fit with the coffee addict in all of us. Also, they have assorted juice for sale, plus beer and wine for those nights where nothing of use is coming out of the pen or the charcoal or the pixels.
Last, but certainly not least, is the atmosphere. Inside the actual coffee shop is an adorable vintage paradise full of interesting decorations, cute places to sit, and even an outdoor garden. After you take your coffee, wine, juice, or beer, you can wander into the garden with dozens of odds and ends-all furniture that looks like it should be in a thrift store and doesn’t match anything out there, but somehow still gives off the vibe of beautiful and charming for all to see. If you stay until the closing time of midnight (convenient for the late-night homework warrior), you can even watch as the garden is a glow with twinkle lights.
Pratt is a great school with dozens of nooks and crannies to explore, but it’s not the only place to go to ensure that homework for LCD is done. Just explore Brooklyn and see all the places you can find.
