The Freshman 15 Best Apps

You will want to gain these apps during your first year of college!

The transition from home life to college life can be challenging, but with these apps the transition can be a little easier. So here's to keeping you healthy, saving you money, helping you explore, and so much more!

1. MyFitnessPal : No one wants to gain the freshman fifteen, but sometimes it seems impossible with all of the food options suddenly surrounding you on campus. With MyFitnessPal, however, keeping those freshman fifteen off is easy! With this app, you can keep track of the calories you are eating, the amount of exercise you are doing, how much water you are drinking, whether or not your diet is balanced, and etcetera. With this app, it is easy to lose weight, maintain weight, or simply make sure you are getting a balanced diet. Cost: Free.

2. 7-Minute Workout :
This a great app for people who, like me, are not the biggest fans of working out, but also for those of you that just want a quick jump start of endorphins and exercise. In this app, you will go through a series of 12 workouts that are 30 seconds in length with a 10 second rest in between each. This app really is wonderful and very helpful. Cost: Free.

3. WaterIn :
The average person requires 8 cups of water day, and that does not mean water with Crystal Light flavors added in or an energy drink in place of a cup of water. The problem that most students face according to www.collegeparents.com

is drinking too many alcoholic beverages at night or energy drinks in place of water throughout the day, and not having good ol' water. So how do we fix this issue? WaterIn! This app allows you to keep track of the amount of water you are drinking and will send you reminders to drink more water if you are under what you need.

Cost: Free.

4. IntelliDrink :

Just because you have gone off to college does not mean you will be drinking up a storm every chance that you get, but it also doesn't mean that you will avoid drinking at all costs. So why not be smart about what you are drinking and how much you are drinking? With IntelliDrink, you can measure your blood alcohol level so that you know exactly where your limit is. IntelliDrink uses a personalized calculator that takes into account your height, weight, age, gender, and the type of alcohol you are consuming.

Cost: $1.99.

5. Sleep Cycle Alarm Clock :

No one really likes waking up in the morning, especially when you're alarm clock always seems to go off right in the middle of a great dream, or when you have finally found that perfectly comfortable spot in your bed. The Sleep Cycle Alarm Clock makes waking up easy...well at least easier. This app tracks your sleep cycles by measuring your movements throughout the night and wakes you up at the precise moment that you are in your lightest sleep phase. When you are woken up in your lightest sleep phase, you are less tired and your sleep quality is improved, which every college student needs.

Cost: $0.99.

6. AnyList :

The worst feeling in the world is buying groceries, coming home, seeing your roommates bought the same things and thus realizing you just wasted a lot of money. Trust me, it will happen, and it will suck. But you can avoid this situation with the AnyList app. AnyList allows you to sync your shopping list with your roommate's shopping list, so you don't buy duplicates of items. You can also sync and share recipes that you want to try. When you find the recipe, you will be provided with a list of ingredients to buy so you don't forget anything. And don't forget about the to-do list sync which makes chore lists much easier!

Cost: Free.

7. EasyBib :
I think it is safe to say that not many people enjoy writing bibliographies. I think it is also safe to say that many students get confused by the different types of bibliographies. What is needed for MLA? Is that the correct format for APA? The EasyBib app can help you with all of those questions! This app has everything that the website offers, and more. You can either enter the title of a book or article and retrieve the information needed for the bibliography, just like on the website, or you can scan the barcode on the publication to get all of the information needed for your bibliography. After you get all of the information, send the list to yourself and take the stress out of bibliography writing! Cost: Free.

8. Postmates :

Have you ever been too lazy to go pick up food or go to the grocery store to get what you need for dinner? Of course you have...everyone has. But how do you get the food you want or get the groceries you need? You use Postmates! Postmates is an app that allows you to order food from your favorite restaurants in town or from the grocery store and have it delivered right to your doorstep. But how is this app different than all of the other apps? Well, I am happy you asked. Postmates offers delivery from restaurants that do not typically offer delivery options. How great is that?!

Cost: Free.

9. GrubHub :

GrubHub is a wonderful app that allows you to order food for pick up or delivery from restaurants in your area and it is as easy as 1, 2, 3. First, you search for the type of cuisine you are craving. You can search Italian, Mexican, Indian, Chinese, Japanese, American, and etcetera. Next, you chose the restaurant and start ordering food. You can even make special requests on the items you want, like substituting a salad for fries or holding the tomatoes. Finally, you order the food. You will get a timeline so you know exactly how long it will be until your food is ready. You can even see when they start making the food and when it is being boxed up!

Cost: Free.

10. Kamino :

If you are in a new city, state, or simply feel like exploring your favorite area, Kamino is the app for you! Kamino is an app that gives you and your friends the chance to go on "urban adventures" in your own backyard by providing you with "walkable playlists" and hikes. Say you want to find the best trails near you, you can find that. Maybe you want to explore the best shopping in your area, you can find that too! There are no limits to what you can explore on Kamino. Start exploring!

Cost: Free.

11. Glassdoor :

Many colleges require their students to have work or internship experience before graduation, but finding the perfect job/internship is not always easy. Sure, you've gone to networking opportunities and looked at the online resources, but nothing stands out. That is where Glassdoor comes in. Glassdoor allows you to search for jobs and internships by key words, salary, and company. You can also see reviews of the companies and interview process from employees and other interviewees so you know exactly what to expect.

Cost: Free.

12. Shopular :

You don't have to be an extreme couponer to save money while shopping. All you need is Shopular! Shopular provides its users with weekly ads and the best in-store deals for all of your favorite stores so that you can save money. Every time you walk into the store, you will get notification about the deals that are happening at that moment. And the best part about this app is you don't have to pay for the deals up front. They are completely free!

Cost: Free.

13. Shopkick :

So what is better than simply saving money while shopping? Earning points for saving money, and then using those points to get gift cards to save even more money! Shopkick is an app that tracks what stores you frequent so that you receive points just for going into the store. Accumulate enough points and receive a gift card to that store. So not only are you getting to see the deals that are happening at the store, but you are also getting gift cards. Yeah, I would say that is  pretty great. Cost: Free.

14. Cartwheel :

Every college student loves Target, and if you say that you don't love Target, you are lying. Target has everything from cute bathing suits, school supplies, house essentials, groceries, games, clothes....the list goes on and on. Target already has wonderful deals on all of the items you need, but with Cartwheel, you can save even more money! Cartwheel gives its users the chance to see deals that might not be listed in stores, and you can use those deals and coupons as many times as you want before they expire. The deals range from 5% savings to 50% savings. And you can couple your Cartwheel app with your REDcard to get even more savings.

Cost: Free.

15. Stereomood :

Studies show that listening to music can improve productivity, but sometimes the music we listen to might distract from studying or doing homework. Stereomood is an app that has a variety of moods or activities that you can choose from and generates a playlist according to what you have chosen. There are so many options! You can select studying, sleeping, showering, calm, sexy, dinner with friends, and so on. You can also favorite songs that you like so they play the next time you sign on. This app is not only helpful, but it allows you to discover music you have never heard before.

Cost: Free.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
