This one is for all of my fellow writers out there. There's nothing more frustrating than wanting to write but having absolutely no idea what to write about or how exactly you want to go about writing it. We've all been there. I was there not too long ago until I realized that the answer was staring me in the face. Writing about writer's block while experiencing writer's block is fairly ironic, but I decided to give it a go. Here's a few ways that you (and I) can avoid it:
1. Don't procrastinate
I admit to being the absolute worst offender of this. It's so easy to put things off until the last possible second, especially when there are so many other things that need to get done in our day to day lives. Set time aside so you're not scrambling to get it done last minute.
2. Phone a friend
Shout out to my awesome Odyssey community and all of the brainstorming sessions we've had. Bouncing off ideas on friends and family can not only give you new topics, but also different perspectives on them as well. Many of my articles have come from conversations I've had with friends. I wouldn't have a lot of my content if it wasn't for them.
3. Read the news
Another great idea generator. Everyone loves to talk and hear about current events. Chances are there's a lot of people out there that share your feelings on a certain news story.
4. Take a break
There are times when you just can't focus. If you've been working at it for a while, step away for a while and come back to it when you have a fresh mind.
5. Pinterest is the best
This might be a less common one, but I've found a lot of interesting ideas for writing on Pinterest. One thing I've learned is that writers love sharing ideas with other writers. I've found everything from how to make your title stand out to types of content readers want. All you need to do is search 'blog' in the search bar and the results are amazing.
6. Remember why you do it
I've always wanted to write but never really knew how to start. I wanted to share my thoughts with the world and engage readers with my perspective on current events. If everyone else gets to have a say and share what they feel, why shouldn't I? That's just my personal reason for writing, but everyone has their own reason. Connecting with the reason you're writing in the first place can help bring a new motivation and focus on what you're trying to accomplish.
The good news is that there is a lot of help out there. It's reassuring to know that you are not alone and there are a lot of ways to beat writer's block. We all experience it, it's just a matter of getting through it and focusing on your goal.
