Bernie Sanders is the man who gets recognition from the millenials and younger voters more than older generations.
On his website he states , "Do we continue the 40-year decline of our middle class and the growing gap between the very rich and everyone else, or do we fight for a progressive economic agenda that creates jobs, raises wages, protects the environment and provides healthcare for all? Are we prepared to take on the enormous economic and political power of the billionaire class, or do we continue to slide into economic and political oligarchy? These are the most important questions of our time, and how we answer them will determine the future of our country."
A lot of people are banking on Hillary Clinton to win the democratic primary election. If you are a democrat and are planning on voting in this election, here are some reasons that Bernie Sanders seems to be "for the millennials" based off of his stand on some of the issues.
Income and Wealth Equality
"No one who works 40 hours a week should be living in poverty."
He explains that the gap between the rich and the poor is very high. A lot of millennials are still trying to find jobs and are growing up in a world where you can't really find jobs in the field that you received a degree in. Chances are that when you do find a job the pay is low and it's not the work you pictured for the money that you make.
Make College Tuition Free and Debt Free
"It is insane and counter-productive to the best interests of our country and our future, that hundreds of thousands of bright young people cannot afford to go to college, and that millions of others leave school with a mountain of debt that burdens them for decades."
This relates to so many millennials because right now many are either going into their undergraduate studies, in their undergraduate studies, or in graduate school. He is focusing this issue on those people, all of the future parents, and anyone else that will have to worry about the financial costs of college.
Getting Big Money Out of Politics
"The Supreme Court essentially declared that corporations have the same rights as natural-born human beings."
Essentially, corporations are controlling the government by buying into candidates' campaigns that they support, and eventually funding them so that they become a popular candidate.
Creating Decent Paying Jobs
"We are in the midst of an ongoing unemployment crisis, and we must take bold action to address it."
He is working to create decent paying jobs which is what a lot of people need right now. He also notices that a lot of minorities are unemployed and need these jobs as well as other Americans.
Living Wage
"We must also establish equal pay for women. It’s unconscionable that women earn less than men for performing the same work."
We now live in a world where women are addressing that we need equality. We are living in a generation that is willing to fight for this with campaigns and organizations. The millennials want a president that is willing to make a big difference and create equality for women.
Climate Change and the Environment
"The United States must lead the world in tackling climate change, if we are to make certain that this planet is habitable for our children and grandchildren."
We live in a world where we're starting to care about the environment a lot more than in the past. Many of the younger generations are all about organic and fresh produce which we can't have without a healthy environment.
Racial Justice
"We must end the over incarceration of nonviolent young Americans who do not pose a serious threat to our society."
We have people fighting for this left and right. Whether it's campaigns like #BlackLivesMatter or #NotYourMascot, people are not remaining silent in cases of social and racial injustice. It's important to many that our future president doesn't stay quiet, either.
LQBT Rights
"In many states, it is still legal to fire someone for being gay. It is legal to deny someone housing for being transgender. That is unacceptable and must change. We must end discrimination in all forms."
Many people in this country today are becoming less and less afraid to come out. These people that are openly being themselves are still discriminated against in many forms, so they want a president that is willing to fight for their rights.
Strengthen and Expand Social Security
"Today, the elderly poverty rate is 10 percent. Although still much too high, that’s a dramatic improvement."
Nobody wants to grow old only to be living in poverty. They also don't want their parents to be living in poverty after working so hard their entire lives. Sanders wants to expand social security so nobody will ever have to live with that reality.
Family Values
"When my Republican colleagues mention “family values,” they’re usually talking about opposition to contraception, denying a woman’s right to choose, or opposition to gay rights."
Our country doesn't guarantee vacation days, paid time off for new parents, or any type of paid leave. For being a first-world country, we are very behind on some very big issues.
War and Peace
"While we must be relentless in combating terrorists who would do us harm, we cannot and should not be policeman of the world, nor bear the burden of fighting terrorism alone".
Nobody really wants there to be war and bloodshed, and the fact that Bernie Sanders knows who the real fights should be against makes him a stronger candidate in many people's eyes.
