Is Being Nice Becoming a Thing of the Past?

When Being Nice is Seen as Being Weird

Is Being Nice Becoming a Thing of the Past?
QuoteFancy

I was walking around my campus one day and seeing people go about their business. Sometimes I like to be nice and say good morning or hello, or even just a smile. I like to make everyone have a better day then what they are already having.

But, I have come to notice that many people don’t reciprocate this back to me. People just seem to be rude, or don’t even know how to say hello back. Is being nice so rare nowadays that many people don’t even know how to respond to it? Have we become so self-absorbed in ourselves that we can’t even take the time out of our day to wave back or even a simple smile?

It baffles me that we can’t even be nice to one another. We always have to be judging someone, no matter what or who it is. I feel like that this is somewhat hardwired into our human psyche. I feel like that we as humans we are hard-wired to be sort of judgmental.

But to many people I see, it consumes them. They judge people on what they like, who they like and how they act. I just don’t understand why we all can’t live our own lives and not be so judgemental and harsh towards people we don’t even know to the fullest extent.

My friend and I were talking about this the other day. We were saying how being nice is so rare that some people don’t even know how to respond to it. Simple, basic manners we have learned as kids are totally gone and thrown out the window it's disgusting. To see how many people are so self-absorbed in their phones and not even say thank you to someone who is holding a door for them.

Respect in the younger generation is gone. People do not respect authority like they used to back in older times. And that pisses me off. People don’t even respect their own parents or teachers. They are there to help you succeed in life. So how dare someone treat them with disrespect, when all they are trying to do is just to help you with your life. It's sad to see that so many people have no respect anymore.

I was taught the golden rules: treat others how you would want to be treated. That seems to be fading with people. Many people are such a#$h*!&s, and then they get treated as such and it is like a never ending cycle. I’m here to say that I will never lose the manners and the "nice-ness" my parents taught me while I was growing up. To see the basic lack of respect is disheartening. And it really makes me wonder about the future generations in the world.

Some people need to take a stand and put these other people in their place. Because if something isn’t done soon, the whole entire world will be miserable and we will lose all respect for all people.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
