Back when I was in high school, I played in the band and sang in the chorus. I was even good enough to sing with our schools "elite" choir and I traveled to Italy to sing with them my senior year. My best friends (who chose to participate in sports instead of chorus) stereotyped me as the "music nerd" of the group. Now that I am in college, I chose not to continue with my musical track and don't really talk about my “talents” to other people. However, that does not stop my friends from finding my old videos or casually coming across pictures of me in my “concert attire.” Every time I get the same response, “OMG, you were a music nerd in high school?” Since I will forever be labeled as “the music nerd,” I’ve decided to let the cast of “Glee” enlighten everyone on what it feels like to be the DMN (designated music nerd).
You're a big dreamer.
"I'm going to go to Juilliard and then become a huge movie star!" said every 10-year-old music nerd ever.
You're probably more competitive than most athletes.
You don't know competition until you've participated in a call back. "Break a leg!" Like, seriously, break your leg please.
You understand how annoying it is when people throw song requests at you.
Yes, I know the words to "My Heart Will Go On." No, I will not sing it right here, right now in the Walmart check-out line.
When people try to argue music theory with you and you're just like:
Wrong. You're just so wrong. Its G sharp not E flat. God, Karen.
You have a secret adoration for show tunes.
My talents include eating, sleeping, and knowing every word to, "Omigod You Guys" from "Legally Blonde: The Musical."
You secretly thrive off of compliments.
Music to a music nerd's ears.
You understand the stress of a dress rehearsal.
Four finals in one day? Psh, that's nothing. Try messing up at a dress rehearsal. That is real stress.
And 7:30 a.m. rehearsals.
Nothing screams "music nerd" more than getting up at the ass crack of dawn just to rehearse "We Wish You A Merry Christmas."
Come to think of it, you're kind of always rehearsing.
Wake up, sing. Go to school, sing. Go home, practice singing.
Auditions are almost second nature to you.
It is actually almost impossible for me to get nervous anymore due to the fact that I've been singing solos since I was 11.
Non-musical people never really understand why you do it.
Then again, they don't understand much about music anyway.
But, no matter what you do, music will always be one of the most valuable things to you.
Even though I graduated and music isn't as prevalent in my life, some of my favorite memories growing up are from rehearsals and performances. Music has given me such joy and provided me such opportunity in my young life and I will always be grateful that I was given such abilities.
I'm a music nerd and I'm proud.
