I am writing this article today because I am tired of seeing people being judged because of their choice of college major. Choosing your major in college is a difficult decision from the beginning and it is rare for someone to find one they truly enjoy. Luckily for me, I have found passion in my major. I have found classes that I love, I truly listen in hopes to learn. Recently, someone laughed after hearing what my major was.
"PR? That's such a basic major."
Yes, public relations may be a 'basic' major, but it is MY basic major. I began college believing I would enter med school and so I chose pre-med. I took classes like biology, calculus, and chemistry. I soon figured out that these were not my cup of tea. I could indeed be a doctor if I truly wanted, but I would hate every second leading up to it. I hated pre-med.
Finally, after weeks of not knowing what other major to choose, I decided on public relations with a double minor in business and journalism. Surprisingly, the classes in my new major were not much easier. Although I wasn't being forced to memorize math formulas and the periodic table, I was being taught the history of public relations and how to manage problems between an organization and its' publics. It was definitely different than biology, but not necessarily easier.
Since then, I have continued to love my change of major. I wake up looking forward to classes and am constantly thinking of my future and what it could lead to. I respect people who choose to do law, pharmacy, nursing, medical school, etc. and they should respect every other major as well. Why does it matter what your major is, as long as you're happy?
Students should realize that everyone is busy with exams, homework, papers, and outside commitments. Do not judge someone based on their major. One day, the boy you make fun of for being 'too dumb' to be a doctor could be operating on your children. The girl you make fun of for choosing journalism, an 'easy major', could be writing a book that will be read throughout history.
College is difficult and students should all stick together. After all, all we actually care about is graduating! Lets do it together happily.
