A Beginner's Guide To Financial Stability

What every young adult should know.

A Beginner's Guide To Financial Stability

What do we learn during our high school and college careers? We’ve all taken the obligatory history, math and science classes that are required of us, but when we leave school and it’s time for the real world, have we learned enough about how to take care of ourselves financially?

Sure, math classes help a ton with what to do with your money, but what do we do once we have it? Or even worse, what do we do if we don’t? I can honestly say I had no idea how to set myself up for a stable financial future until I took a Business 101 class.

So what are some things I’ve learned that could put you on the road to saving more?

1. If you feel the need to shop, there are ways to do so without spending more than necessary.

If you come across an item that you like that might have a missing button or the hem might be a little off, don’t turn your nose up at it! Bring it up to store manager, they might be able sell the item for you than less than originally priced.

2. Ever think about retirement?

Even if you’re in your 20s, it’s something to think about. Invest in your future now with a Roth IRA. This is an Independent Retirement account that allows you to save for retirement tax free! If you make below a specified amount a year, you might qualify for this and if you do take full advantage.

3. If you are a credit card holder, your best bet in any situation would be to avoid debt altogether.

Paying in full every month might seem tough, but it keeps you out of debt, less tempted to spend and gives you a great credit standing.

4. Building a buffer is another great way to avoid the feeling of an empty wallet.

A buffer is another way of saying saving extra money on the side. This stops you from living pay check to paycheck. Think of it as an emergency fund; it’s smart for everyone to have one. You never know when you’ll need it and it’s better to be safe than sorry.

If it weren’t for taking a business class, I would have never thought about saving for retirement this early. I would have never thought about asking for discounts on items that weren’t already marked down, and paying off a credit card in full might’ve seemed impossible.

We have to take it upon ourselves to be educated on what it takes to have a stable financial future. Make life easy by taking a class on it like I did or doing a little research. It always pays off in the end.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
