Have a friend who's a big theatre fan?
Looking for a good birthday/Christmas/Halloween present for said fan?
Not a theatre fan yourself?
Well, here's a quick guide to some of Broadway's biggest hits for theaters, not biggest fans.
There are tons of shows to see in New York City; comedies, dramas, and everything in-between.
The question is where to start looking?
Lets start with some comedies.
"Something Rotten!"
A spectacular masterpiece of comedy. The show follows the Bottom brothers in their quest to write the best play in history! But one problem stands in their way: William Shakespeare. With the help of a soothsayer, they create the world's first musical! But will it be the best play ever written? You have to see the show to find out.
"Something Rotten!" is bound to make you laugh and cry with a large smile on your face.
"The Book of Mormon."
Winner of 9 Tony awards, "The Book of Mormon" is definitely a musical not meant for children. It has been running since 2011 and follows Mormon missionaries as they try to convert the masses to the Mormon religion. But when two Mormon brothers encounter a hostile tribe in Africa, hilarity ensues.
Tickets are difficult to come by; but definitely worth the search...and price.
If you're looking for more of a family friendly musical, then these next two are for you.
"Aladdin."
Based on the successful Disney movie of the same name, "Aladdin" is brought to the life on the big stage with a magical adventure following everyone's favorite prince of thieves. When "Aladdin" finds a magic lamp with a genie inside, his world is turned upside down as he tries to swoon the beautiful Princess Jasmine.
Aladdin is full of fun, laughs and Disney magic that the entire family will love.
"The Lion King."
Another musical based on a Disney classic, "The Lion King" follows Simba, a young lion, on his journey through the circle of life. Just think "Hamlet" for children. One of the best musicals on broadway because of its intricate costumes. A must see for children.
Now, if you're more into something more dramatic, then the following is for you.
"Les Miserables"
Based on Victor Hugo's class novel of the same name, "Les Miserables" first opened on broadway in the 80's and was recently revived in 2014 with an all new spin on the set.
"Les Miserables" is the story of a man named Jean Valjean who was just released from a 19 year sentence for stealing a loaf of bread for his niece. Valjean, branded with the title of a con, struggles to find normality. He changes his identity and lives a life on the run from his nemesis, Javert.
This revival of "Les Miserables" will blow your mind. Not recommended for children due to its length, and slight violence, but definitely one of the best dramas on broadway.
"Fun Home."
Based on the novel by Alison Bechdel, "Fun Home" follows Ms. Bechdel as she struggles to deal with the death of her gay father, and coming out herself. "Fun Home" won the 2015 Tony Award for Best Musical and has received high praise from the broadway and LGBT community.
Highly recommended for young adults and older.
