A Beginner's Guide to Astrology

Written with Sarah Schulte and Jeremy Swanton!

I know it sounds like some hippy dippy shenanigans, but this stuff is weirdly accurate. Turns out, your zodiac sign isn’t all there is to the story. Here are the basics so you can start learning about yourself and those around you.

1. Zodiac Sign / Sun Sign

Your zodiac sign is based on your birthday. There are 12 and each comes with their own set of personality traits. They’re your astrological core, your foundation. When asked, most people can tell you their zodiac sign, so they’re largely perceived as the broadest astrological classification. Zodiac signs are divided into four categories: Earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn), Air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius), Fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius), and Water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces). Earth signs are grounded and more introverted, while Air signs are more knowledgeable and free-spirited. Water signs are nurturing and adaptable, and Fire signs are passionate leaders.

2. Rising Sign / Ascendant

The next step in analyzing your astrological makeup is determining your rising sign. Your rising sign is based on how the planets are positioned at the time and place of your birth. This sign describes the version of yourself that you present to other people; the first impression that others receive of you when they first meet you. Your rising sign can be any one of the twelve signs of the zodiac and is independent of your sun sign.

3. Moon Sign

This is based on which zodiac house the moon was in at the time and location of your birth. Your moon sign describes your inner self that you only reveal to those closest to you. This sign shows which traits are very important to you.

For example, my birthday is May 23rd, which makes me a Gemini (Air). I was born in Sedalia, Missouri at 2:07 pm, so my rising sign is Virgo (Earth) and my moon sign is Leo (Fire).

4. Star Charts

This will show you where all the planets were when you were born. If you put in your info, it will tell you what all your signs are and what they mean, and some bonus info if you’re extra interested.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
