With all the stress, confusion and excitement of leaving for college you seem to forget one thing -- your dog. The one friend that is always at your side, and will always be there if you need anything, but you have to leave him behind. You sometimes even wish you could put your dog with your things and sneak him into your dorm, but you can't find a loophole in the “no pets allowed” rule. Your dog is so used to you, his best friend, coming home everyday to play, but you won't be home for weeks or even months. This is literally the saddest day of your life, but these couple of steps will help you get through this rough patch in your (and your fluffy friend’s) life.
1. Play Extra
Even if you normally hate playing tug of war with your dog once both ends of the rope get slobbery, keep going. The little bit of extra time playing with your dog will make you feel better after you leave. You'll know that you made the extra effort to make them happy, and they'll never turn down some super sticky tug of water.
2. Cuddle
During one of your normal Netflix binges, maybe your dog doesn't sleep with you or sit near you. But up until you leave, let them. If you have a big dog, maybe even use them as a pillow. Small dog? They are like a little stuffed animal. Let them lay across your body and they'll love the extra time spent with you.
3. Treats
Who doesn't like seeing their dogs face light up with a few extra treats every once in a while? Their tails will wag and their eyes will light up like crazy. A couple extra won't make them fat, so give them something just to see that excitement from them before you go.
4. This Isn't Permanent
You're probably not leaving forever. If you're leaving from your parents house, then you have to be back for at least holidays and maybe even more often. You will see your dog again. Don't forget that.
Leaving any pet is hard but some dogs are just so special. Just remember that this isn't a goodbye, it's just a see you later.
