Think of these things before you begin your freshman year.

Coming to college will be an adventure - a great one at that. There are a few things though that I wish I had known before my freshman year. Consider these before you go into what could be one of the best years of your life.

You will develop crappy eating habits if you aren't careful

Your parents aren't there so they can't tell you what to eat and what not to eat. You have freedom. You have a lot of readily available fast food options, which can make the decision a hard one. Try to pick the healthier options when eating on campus.

Money goes really quickly

You start off with all this money that you saved up over the summer. Then your friends want to go out to eat or go to the mall until one day you realize you don't have enough money to even go downtown. Try to budget and if you have the time and dedication, get a job and try to keep spending to a minimum.

Sleeping at-least 8 hours a night is a good thing

Sometimes it's necessary to stay up all night and study for a big exam but most of the time it doesn't help you at all. Feeling tired will not help you stay awake during your classes at 8 AM the next day. Research finds that it's better to study then sleep because you will retain more information. Keep a planner and strategize how you will get everything done.

You will lose friends

When you enter college you will be in different times of life than your friends and you will go down different paths. You realize who your real friends are and who you actually want to invest your time in. That could mean you stay in touch with none of your old friends and that's okay - you can make new ones. Let go of the negative relationships.

Your school will be your second home

welcome-home

Living at school is like a long vacation. When you go back home you just feel so nice, people have missed you and want to spend time with you. You grow up and change and you start to see how your university has turned into your new home, and you may even miss being there.

Learning to be Independent

You have to learn to be independent to be successful. College is a great way to gain independence. You make the rules. This is harder than it sounds and you realize you have to wake yourself up, cook all your own meals, and do your own laundry. It's all up to you and forces you to come out of your comfort zone.

Don't be afraid of change

Change happens all the time. If you have doubts, change the situation. Chances are you will change your major at least once. It's okay to change your mind about anything and everything. Do what you think is best for you and if you don't know, just give it time. Things may change on their own.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
