A lot of teens dream of getting tattoos the moment they turn 18, and often plan on getting huge, pricey pieces of art that cover large parts of their body. Before anyone gets their first tattoo, they should consider several things, so that they have the best experience possible.
- Do some research! Not only is it important to do research, but it’s important to explore your different options! There are millions of designs to choose from, hundreds of locations, and artists waiting for you.
- Choose a design you really love. This sounds elementary, but it’s important to find a design that you’re going to want for the rest of your life. A tattoo is a big step in your life, and choosing a design that is meaningful to you will make all the difference. However, your design doesn’t have to have a significant meaning in your life! Tattoos are art, and sporting a beautiful piece of art doesn’t have to mean anything; just make sure it’s something you will love forever!
- Get to know your artist. Check out portfolios, email artists, and chat with them. Getting to know your artist makes the whole process easier and will help with any anxiety you may have before getting your tattoo.
- Read up on aftercare. Your artist will most likely give you instructions on how to take care of your new tattoo, but it’s always good to look into it before you go under the gun and get prepared for what’s to come. Most artists suggest using a fragrance-free soap to clean your tattoo, and a healing ointment for several days.
- Check out local tattoo parlors. You should be comfortable getting your first tattoo, and you should make sure you feel comfortable in the environment you will be getting tattooed in.
- Consider the location of your tattoo, and the cost. For a long time, I wanted my first tattoo to be the entire span of my forearm, before I realized how much that would have actually cost me. Many people are very ambitious with the size of their first tattoo, and don’t realize how much it will truly cost them. Most tattoo parlors have a shop minimum of about $75-$100, even if the tattoo is very tiny. And after the cost of the tattoo itself, you should tip your artist, for giving you the gift of a new tattoo. This can add up quickly, so it’s good to consider a smaller tattoo first, especially if you are worried about other factors, like pain.
