I have lived (nearly) in Beaumont, TX for 18 years now. As I have grown older, I went through a phase of absolutely hating it to growing a deep respect for it. While attending the local university, I could not hear enough of how some people wanted to just get out of town. I used this as a challenge to myself to find the beauty in this "small" town.
Beaumont, TX... some but not all have heard of this place; most describe it as that one town an hour and a half out of Houston. While it is true, there is little "crowd attractions" in Beaumont, it really is a beautiful place. Beaumont has a beautiful downtown area; while it is practically abandoned, it makes for the perfect place to stroll in the evening and it is wonderful for feeling nostalgic or wondering about what the past life was like in the "good ole days". There are also several open fields in Beaumont that have become my favorite places for stargazing and picnics. Several parks are located here as well, and each is good for different activities. A couple of the parks in Beaumont are good for playing games/sports while a few are better for admiring the scenery and nature.
The thing about Beaumont that has really captured my heart is the close community. It is safe to say that just about everyone in Beaumont knows everyone else. I personally enjoy this aspect of Beaumont because I find it nice to walk into stores or restaurants and just be able to say "Hello" to familiar faces. I also really like imagining what Beaumont used to be like. I think it has a sort of ora about it that is almost regal (it is at least when I think about it).
While Beaumont will more than likely become part of Houston in the near future, I will forever admire it for being the perfect sized community with its own unique attractions. I will remember the few open fields that were perfect for watching lightening storms and admiring the stars.
