I'm sure many people have heard the phrase relentlessly told to them:
"Be the change that you wish to see in this world"- Ghandi.
Teachers have barked this phrase hoping it sticks along with parents, coaches, mentors, etc. Most of the time, life really does becomes difficult with the college applications, job searches, loan taking, etc. When life's worries overcome us, we begin to lose sight of what's truly important in this world we share. In a world filled with millions and billions of other people and other living creatures, it's mind-blowing to think that some people can only see the world as a confined piece of technology balancing between the pointer finger and thumb of those who behold it.
Let's take a moment to think. We're all guilty of absorbing ourselves into a piece of technology. The world is literally at your fingertips. Want to find a restaurant? Google it. Want to solve a math problem? Ask Siri and then Google it. Want to find a job? Download an app to find a job. With everything so accessible at our fingertips, we begin to turn into a generation that's afraid of communication and afraid to move beyond the keyboard on our home screen. Did anything any previous teacher or professor taught me resonate today? Could I honestly say I'm really in tune with the lecture or lesson? Probably not if I'm so overcome with life's worries.
Life's worries overcome us all and we're all guilty of solving our own worries at the fix of a Google Search or at the click of a download that we begin to lose sight of the importance in this life. We can't be so self-absorbed that we've grown unaware of the problems on our home front.
We're put on this Earth to make a difference. Whether that difference be at home, in your community, in your state, or in this country; we are all put on this Earth to make the world a better place than when we stepped on it. We think that by fixing our own problems and fixing ourselves is a means to make the world better. This is true. But, this is the first step. By making yourself an all around better person can you then think about others.
Sometimes, we all need to unplug for a little while. Technology is great, don't get me wrong. I use it constantly for social media, online college assignments, tutorials, DIY ideas, etc. But, we can't always let the virtual life overcome us. Through the virtual reality of the online world, many fall victim to cyber bullying, exploitation, etc. As much as technology has grown and helped, it can also hurt those around us. Technology has given these bullies a false sense of security that they're virtually untraceable and undetectable.
In this world where bullying has grown to new means and the world is easily at our fingertips, it's a little harder to figure out what it means for us to be this change in this developing world.
For me, I begin with my home front. I begin with helping the little guy. Everyone needs a helping hand sometimes, even ourselves. So, "to be the change I wish to see in this world", I began with something few actually do. I began with my career.
I'm no activist, by all means, but I believe that in this world we all deserve a fighting chance, an education, and a chance to pay it forward when everything comes full circle. I believe that all these jobs I've ever taken on was all to help give back to my community and give my community a fighting chance. Whether it was working at a daycare, being a manager, being a police dispatcher, being a writer, or now just by being a coach, I've found my place to give back.
As I move into my career as a teacher, I return to another phrase that bounce's off Ghandi's:
"Choose a job you love and you will never have to work a day in your life"- Confucius.
By learning about my job as a teacher and beginning it as a coach, I've felt that I am able to give back to my community. I'm able to show the students I work with that education is an option and that when they grow to their full potential, they too, can be the change they wish to see in this world. I guess you could say, I love my job. I love unplugging from technology, networking face to face, and learning about the people in my community. I am a people person. I am a person who wants to help others. Most importantly, through my love of my future career, I am someone who is the change in this world that I knew I could be.
Be a helping hand today.
