When I saw this dialogue being delivered in the trailer, I was hooked.
Batman: “Let me ask you. Do you bleed?”
Superman stares at Batman’s face. He shows his anger, superiority, but cannot help and show a little bit of respect as well. He flies off, giving Batman a warning, asking him to stop.
Batman: “You will!”
The way Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill acted out this scene; it made my decision of watching this movie absolutely certain. And even before we get into the entire debate, I would just like to take a moment and applause the person/people in charge of designing and creating the posters for this movie. Even a person who strongly dislikes DC or comic book movies cannot deny the quality and eye-catching ability of these images. Even the movie poster above is with no doubt one of the best ones I have ever seen. Everything from the costumes, the merged ‘BvS’ logo, the overall dark tone, the anticipation of the punch they both are about to throw is just incredible.
Now I know that posters and visualizations of the story can be good, and the movie can still be bad. It reminds me of those bananas, which look pretty good from the outside, so you get hope. However, when you peel them, it is that evil mushy looking face of Satan, that is completely disgusting. But, that is not the case with this movie.
So let’s take a look at what the movie is about. "Batman v Superman," “the greatest gladiator match in history,” as said by Lex Luthor in the trailer. The movie revolves around the idea of Batman standing against Superman, it is very similar to the idea of how people become friends. They challenge each other until they find out that they both want good. And that is exactly what Zack Snyder (Director: BvS) is trying to do here. The movie also shows how Batman gets prepped for his confrontation with Superman, and not only physically, but strategically and mentally as well. Snyder, then introduces Lex Luthor to us. One of the most intellectual and dangerous villains in the DC universe. However, it doesn’t stop there. We also get to see Lex Luthor’s genius at work, and how he plans to overthrow Superman and Batman both. Also, since this is the beginning of the DC cinematic universe, Zack Snyder teases us with a good amount of wonder’s.
That is pretty much it. That’s all. Does it not sound exciting? Even if you are not a superhero movie fan, that is definitely a movie experience. It is something epic. Something that has not happened in years, and finally is being done.
You should definitely look forward to some basic things such as: The brilliant chemistry between Henry Cavill and Ben Affleck. The amazing CGI effects, everything from the battle scenes to superman’s individual scenes. Introduction to the DC cinematic universe. But, that is not what makes this movie good. The movie is dark and realistic. Yes, I am aware of the criticism about that. But, the consequences shown in this movie are real. The damage, the political issues, the teams that have formed, the whole discussion of Superman being either the savior or the destroyer. The movie follows Christopher Nolan’s (Director-Writer: Batman Trilogy) idea of building a dark universe. The way the writers of the movie have showed Superman’s life after the events of ‘Man of Steel’ are amazing. Apart, from the main characters, the movie brilliantly slides in little clues and Easter eggs from the supporting DC universe. Robin’s suit being the most visible with Joker’s markings on it. And trust me, if you look with just a bit of focus you can see some really cool teases. And yes, applause to Zack Snyder, because they have been inter twined with the movie and sets amazingly.
Just like a lot of people, I was also very disappointed with the way critics were rating the movie. The reviews that were coming out. And I do accept, for a moment I was hesitant to even go spend money to watch this movie. But, then I realized. Critics don’t have to like every movie I like. And this movie followed a very tough act, which was the batman trilogy. People and critics had huge expectations. And I totally understand. But as a movie obsessed person/lover something which I have always said is make up your own mind. Listen, to the critics, but if you want to see a movie. Go and see it. Don’t stop yourself just because some people said it was bad. And by the way, just some extra information, rotten tomatoes which rated this movie at 28% on their tomatometer, gave Daredevil (2003) a 44% rating. Seriously. Like seriously, rotten tomatoes thinks Daredevil was a better movie compared to BvS. That’s just plain weird. That is just weird and disappointing.
IMDB on the other hand, gave the movie a 7.2 rating, which is not actually bad. A lot of movies with similar rating have been critic and fan favorites.
Zack Snyder tried his best to direct this movie. And he achieved a good beginning to the universe. However, I am in favor of replacing him as a director. Not because he was bad, but because I know there is more potential if some other directors have a chance of directing these movies. Especially, for the solo Batman movies and the Justice league franchise, I would really like to see Christopher Nolan come back and bring back his amazing skills of intellectual and cerebral story telling. I am also open to David Ayer getting these projects, who is currently directing ‘Suicide Squad’. And I have one more. Wait for it. I had not thought of this person until I saw someone throw this out on reddit, but yes I am also open to Ben Affleck directing the solo batman movies. Argo, The Town, and Gone Baby Gone, were all very well directed movies.
So, I tried very hard to list the good things about this movie without actually spoiling it in any way. I hope it was helpful to realize that it is actually not that bad. Yes, it is not the best, and there is a lot of room for growth. Something, we all need to do is give this movie a chance. It is a very good experience. If you love movies, you will have fun. The dark and seasoned nature of Batman and the heroic yet confused nature of Superman, is a great story to watch.
Also, Gal Gadot. That is all I need to say. She took Wonder Woman to a whole new level. And it is Gal Gadot. Amazing.
