Barbie is no longer exclusively 5’9'' with an itty-bitty waist and an ample chest; Mattel just gave her a makeover.
On January 28, the company debuted Barbies with eight different skin tones, 14 facial structures, 22 hairstyles, 23 hair colors and 18 eye colors, according to CNN.
There’s even a Barbie with flat feet, or rather, feet that aren’t designed to fit in sky-high heels. It seems that the company has made a real effort to be inclusive, and it’s about time. Since Barbie made her debut in 1959 she hasn’t changed much. There have been a few variations in skin tone and hairstyle, but she’s kept the same slim, disproportioned figure. In fact, she's gotten thinner over the years.
Glamour Magazine asked a group of girls what they thought about the new dolls and their responses were overwhelmingly positive. Dasani, age 9, said, " I think she has a really unique look." Liat, age 12, agreed: “I think you can relate to them more.”
Kudos to Mattel for celebrating diversity after almost 60 years. The dolls are available on www.Barbie.com. Check out some of the newest dolls below.
