Dear President Barack Obama,
I write this letter to you with a heavy heart as I know what this letter signals. It is signaling the end to an amazing eight years. I know you may not know personally, but you have always looked out for me nonetheless. My name is Charlsley Carey, I'm 19 years old and I'm a college student. President Obama, you have accomplished many great things during your stay in the White House. You established healthcare for every person in the United States, no matter what preconditions they had or what their financial status was. You created more jobs in 2010 alone than Bush did in his entire 8 years as president. You signed the CARD Act to protect consumers from unfair and deceptive credit card acts (as a young person who is just starting to dip my feet in the water and build up credit, this is greatly appreciated). You have worked tirelessly to make sure there is representation of minorities. You have made "sexual assault" and "rape" no longer a dirty word, you have done so much to help victims and survivors. You have so many accomplishments, it would take me days to write them all out... but, perhaps there is one accomplishment you didn't know you had.
You, sir, are the first president to ever make care about politics. Of course, when you were first elected I was in the 6th grade - so, before you I really didn't pay attention to any presidents. You were the first president I ever really noticed that the election was a very big deal. I remember my friends and I on the bus taking sides, "Obama has this in the bag." "I don't know, I like McCain!" And then in the end, it was you.
Over the next eight years I sat and watched you conquer the world. I paid attention on the news when your name came up (and considering you are the President of the United States, your name came up quite a bit). I followed your policies and I really enjoyed watching you have a bromance with Vice President Joe Biden. I have watched as you have made the role of President of the United States look both respected and esteemed, as well as look cool and fun.
You were real. You were probably one of the realest and most genuine presidents we have had in this modern age, and probably will ever have once again. You weren't afraid to laugh at yourself, and you weren't afraid to cry in front of us when both you're heart and this world was broken.
Your love for your wife and your two daughters was beautiful to watch. There is no denying that you are in a head-over-heels kind of love with Michelle, and she feels the same about you. It has also been neat to have two daughters in the White House to be around the same age as myself and watching them grow up with me.
You have been a classy president, a fun president, a smart president, an open president, a caring president, a compassionate president, a loving president, a family driven president, a great president, an inspiring president.
We may never see someone quite like you again, Barack, and for that I am deeply saddened. Though you will not be in office, I know you will still be watching out over the people you used to call your own and rooting for us as our biggest cheerleader.
So Obama, yes we can. Yes we did. Yes we can.
