This week, you'll hear tons of people talking about one of the best movie trilogies of all time, Back to the Future. People have been waiting since 1989 for one date: October 21, 2015. And it's here! It's finally here! Back to the Future buffs automatically know what this date means. It's not a random day in October, but actually the only future date within the series. When Marty and Doc venture to the year 2015 in Back to the Future Part II, viewers see what Steven Spielberg, Robert Zemeckis, Bob Gale, and other crew members guessed 2015 would look like. This year, Back to the Future enthusiasts (like myself) get to celebrate the trilogy, drool over Michael J. Fox, and giggle at what people of the 80's anticipated for 2015.
Hover Conversion
The film begins in the sky. In the Delorean. Why? Bob Gale and his team expected that cars would be able to fly by now. Interstates would be in the clouds, known as "skyways". (I think this is the only solution to the Green Hills construction traffic.) Also, fuel comes from food instead of gasoline. Holy moly, let's make that happen.
Hoverboards
Another prediction was that everyone would own a hoverboard, from little kids to teenagers. So much better than those weird 2-wheeled electric skateboards that have come out recently, am I right?
Hologram
There are several references to holograms while Marty and Doc are in 2015. And that Jaws 19 would be out in theaters. Ha. The entire theater is called a "Holomax".
Food Hydration
Instead of spending time cooking, the film predictions food magically hydrates to the size you ask it to. This would make life 20x easier. Also, Marty McFly Jr. calls the "Garden Center" to the dinner table, or literally a garden that comes out of the ceiling with fresh fruit. AKA My dream.
Futuristic Fashion
Automatic sizing on clothing would be THE BOMB. And power laces. And automatic drying functions. How cool?! In the film, though, teenagers wears clothes inside out...glad that's not real.
Cubs Win The World Series
This is the prediction that is most popular right now, because the Cubs are doing so well. In an interview with ESPN, screenwriter Bob Gale said, "It's a double joke because they win the World Series against Miami -- which [didn't have] major league baseball in 1989. ... The second prediction, people don't automatically realize when they watch the movie today, but we were predicting there would be a major league team in Miami."
A Nod To Politics
When Marty reads a 2015 newspaper, two headlines stand out. "President Says She's Tired" alludes to the assumption that America would have a female president by now. Pretty realistic prediction! The other headline, though, reminds us of the tragic loss of Princess Diana when she is mentioned as "Queen Diana" in multiple places on this front page.
What Is Considered Vintage?
In this scene, viewers get a glimpse of what the crew predicted would be out-of-style in 2015. Lava lamps, irons, dust busters, almanacs, VCRs, TVs, Perrier are just a few.
It takes a close eye and ear to notice all of the references Back to the Future Part II makes. Other predictions include:
-rejuvenation clinics are super popular - biotic implants, skin grafting, face lifts, etc
-meteorology has been perfected and all watched contain precise weather prediction functions
-all lawyers have been abolished, making a swifter justice system
-leashes are automated dog-walkers
-multiple TV channels can play at one time, and windows can be "scene screens"
-waiters, journalists, and gas pumps are all computerized
- sleep inducers are given through eyes
-Michael Jackson is a cooking show host
-trash cans are known as "litter bugs" and crawl throughout the city
-to enter a house, you need a thumbprint that is programmed to that family instead of using a doorknob
-Oprah Winfrey is still on the air
Some predictions turned out to be true! The film mentions brands that have lasted, like Nike, Black and Decker, Texaco, USA Today, and Mattel. A version of Facetime or Skype is shown, but the movie calls it "interfacing". Marty visits a tacky, nostalgic, vintage theme restaurant, which are still sort of a thing.
Theaters all over the country will be bringing Back to the Future Part II back to the big screen on October 21, and you best believe I will be there! The Belcourt will be playing the entire trilogy in one night, which sounds better than Christmas to me!If you don't head to theaters to see the film, at least watch this original trailer to boost the morale!
