Tired of your typical, run of the mill feminine hygiene product ads and programming? Want something fresh and new that perhaps educates people about periods, particularly children? Then do I have the video for you!
Earlier this week I had the chance to learn about the video for the song “Menslåten,” or “The Period Song.” “The Period Song” aired this past week for the show "Bacillakuten" on the Barnkanalen Children’s Channel, which is part of the public service broadcaster SVT located in Sweden. The song’s video features one of the show’s hosts, Alex Hermansson, walking around with a ukulele celebrating periods, complete with an interesting segment in which features Hermansson with googly-eyed tampon marionettes dressed in cute costumes at some type of dance party. The point of the song is in line with Bacillakuten’s goal of educating children about their bodies, aiming to teach them about menstruation while aiding to alleviate the stigma that still surrounds periods, reminding us that menstruation is a normal and healthy thing for women to go through each month.
However, "Bacillakuten" is no stranger to taking a more progressive route in order to educate children about their bodies. Earlier this year the show released a music video in which sparked controversy titled “Snoppen och Snippan,” (translated to “Willie and Twinkle” in English), a one-minute clip featuring dancing cartoon penises and vaginas. The clip was part of an entire month on the children’s show aimed at educating children about genitals.
