You can always be found groups cracking jokes that don't make any sense but people still laugh at them because they're kind of confused. In group pictures you're always the tallest one and your friends always make you stand on the end for pictures. You can always be found awkwardly bobbing around on the dance floor or covered in bruises. Being the awkward friend is basically being Gilligan from "Gilligan's Island". This is the accumulation of stories of how I came to the conclusion that I am the awkward friend, which I'm happy about because I'm dope.
1. Awkward Dancing
It was the sophomore year of high school, and I was going to my first homecoming dance and was so excited. I had the cutest dress and was going will all my friends. We all showed up to the dance and ran to the dance box located in the middle of the dance floor. Halfway into the dance, 'Teach Me How To Dougie' came on and as someone thinking that they could do it, I began to dougie. I was really into it when I looked around at my friends and realized I don't know how to dougie at all and that they were just standing there watching me. I slowly stopped dancing and played it off like I was joking about dancing like that.
2. Awkward Dates
A few summers ago I got asked on a date by this guy I had thought was really cute and we were hanging out in his living room watching movie. I had a wristband on my wrist from the county fair the night before. I began to pull the wristband off and proceeded to punch myself in the face, giving myself a bloody nose. I then made some joke that I have since then blocked from my memory and just slowly got up from the couch and walked to the bathroom.
3. Regular Moments Of Public Awkward/Embarrassment
At the beginning of my freshman year of college, I was at the library working on an essay for my Psych class. I was had my headphones in and was listening to music typing away when I got a phone call from my dad. I stood up and walked away only to be yanked back and fell because I left the headphones in. I stood up and everyone in the vicinity was staring at me laughing. Needless to say, I packed up my things and ran out of the library.
4. Awkward social skills
My friends and I were standing in a group talking to some boys that we had just met. They were talking about high school stories and I thought that it would be a great idea for me to chime in then and tell them about the time my dog died before my junior prom. I don't know why I thought it would be a good, or funny, idea to bring this topic up. Everyone in the group just went silent and my friend Hannah looked at me and just gave me a look that basically said, "WTF."
Although these are just four of my countless stories, being the awkward, clumsy, goofy, friend is probably the best type of friend you can be. Being the awkward friend is always the best because the situations you get into are so weird and sometimes it becomes a funny story.
I love who I am and would not change a thing. I love telling my stories of how I embarrassed myself or of an awkward encounter I had. People always call me out for being awkward but if I wasn't the awkward friend, I wouldn't be me.
