Maybe that feeling is just for me? As an out of state student I can't just walk out my front door and be at school unlike 90% of the students at The University of New Mexico.
I always get this weird feeling when August rolls around because my mind and body must know that school is right around the corner. On one side I want to go back, not for the classroom, but to pick up where I left off in the spring, but on the other side i don't want to leave my home and the friends i have had all my life. These are some of the essential problems that every out of state kid faces when returning to college. Every college kid wants that freedom to be able to do whatever you want when you want and that is what college is for. The tricky part is maintaining that freedom and knowing how to use it. This is essential to growing up.
That nostalgic feeling of school looming is imprinted into the minds of college students from the time the were in kindergarten and a mental alarm clock has been set for some of us since we were young. Many will say, "oh, it is so hard to transition back into school mode", but we are so trained for school that even a couple month layoff does not effect that mental clock will have in us. Yes, it might take a few days or a week to get back into the mindset of school but remarkably, somehow we also transition into that mode of waking up and going from class to class. We have been doing the same process for so long that now it is like second nature to most of us students that we do not even realize how trained we actually are.
Eventually school just becomes a process that you go through every year and do not have a second thought about it. We have get different feelings when going back to school every year, you get those who absolutely love school because they feel like everything they learn each day is going to help them in the future, then you get those who have mixed feelings and have that love/hate relationship like Rihanna and Ne-Yo, and finally they're are those who absolutely despise it and rather use their street smarts to succeed in life rather than using what school has taught them. Whatever school means to you or the feeling you get from going back to school, take something from it or it will be pointless.
P.S. For those of you who do not get that Rihanna and Ne-Yo reference, here you go.
