I can vividly remember as a kid going to my grandparents' house and getting into all sorts of mischief with my aunts. We fought like cats and dogs sometimes, but at the end of the day, we loved each other. We stood up for each other when we needed to and still to this day we have each other's backs. You can call them anytime you need someone to talk to and they are there. I cannot express how thankful I am that God blessed me with two beautiful aunts who are my sisters. This is why I love them and am thankful for them:
1. Questions like, "Is that your sister/Is that your daughter?"
The amount of times we have heard this phrase is a little ridiculous. I seriously roll my eyes a little when someone asks this. Because I was so close in age with both of my aunts, often enough I would get mistaken for their sister, or as we got older and even now, their daughter. It is silly to us, but to some people, they honestly are not sure. But to me, I like having people ask us that. It made me feel as a kid that I actually was their sister.
2. They are your "little mothers."
Even though I am 20 years old, I still get phone calls from each of them asking me questions as if they are my mother. Often enough now, I get the same phone call I get from my own mother, "When are you coming to see me? I miss you." I always answer the same to them just as I would my mom. "Sorry, school has been busy and I promise I will come and see you soon!" As a kid, this was super annoying to me and I always wanted them off my back, but I appreciate their concern for me now at the end of the day.
3. They're your road trip buddies.
One of my favorite things to do with my aunts is to go on road trips with them. We have the best time, and honestly, have made some of the best memories. Sharing a room every trip we make has never been a bad experience. and every time we get together there is plenty of laughing and pictures being taken.
4. They're your built-in friends for life.
Yes, even though we are related, my aunts are my best friends. We are the Three Musketeers and nothing in this world can tear us apart. I am thankful for their friendship and their never-ceasing love for me. I know that just as I would a friend, I can depend on them and tell them anything.
5. Tough love
Since we are so close in age, we can easily give each other a big dose of tough love! In moments when we need to hear the truth, we tell each other. There are rare moments when things are sugar coated, and even though sometimes the truth hurts, I know that each of them means well and wants to see me succeed.
6. The nicknames
For the first few years of my life, I called each of them aunt so-and-so, but as I got older, other nicknames started to stick with them. Katherine turned into Kat and Elizabeth turned into Liz, and from there the names started getting creative and really took off. My nicknames are never-ending from these two. I feel like every time I go up to visit them a new version of a nickname is born.
7. Inside jokes
It never ceases to amaze me how many inside jokes we have each developed over the years. We can mention one word and we instantly burst into laughter. I'm sure as the years go on there will be a million more created, and I enjoy every single time we get together.
I love how as we each have grown up we are becoming more and more like one another. I look up to my aunts for everything, and I have always since I was a child wanted to grow up and be like the both of them. If I can manage to become half the woman they are, I think I will be abundantly blessed.
