As soon as we slam the books shut and hit the swimming pools to celebrate the arrival of summer, we are filled with a kind of vigor that we hope will carry us through until the end of the hot, sunny months. We spend hours upon hours soaking up the sun poolside and having bonfires with our best friends. But by the time August rolls around, we start turning into the Britney Spears, shaved head, hoping-for-a-miracle hot mess. Our thoughts are consumed with a million different things all looking to take refuge in our no-vacancy filled minds.
So why does August always bring out the worst in us every year it rolls around?
1. The suffocating heat.
When will 60° be the new 90°?
2. The rents breathing down your neck.
It’s been going on all summer, but by August, they’re about to set off your last nerve.
3. The fear of all your responsibilities lurking just around the corner.
College apps that need to be sent in, job resumes that need to be submitted, books to order for classes. The list goes on and on.
4. Work work work.
Does it ever end? Unfortunately for your well-being, this is just the beginning. But hey, at least your wallet is happy.
5. Sunburns on steroids.
For those of us that fall victim to the sun’s intense UV rays, you feel my pain. Thanks to August, we’re more ready for the chilly months of October and November than we've ever been when protective pants and sweaters are finally acceptable to wear in public.
6. School is a few weeks away???
Mixed feelings of course, but the prospect of having to put effort into reading textbooks and paying attention to lectures is almost too much to bear.
7. Preparing the goodbye speeches.
Saying your farewells to your hometown besties is one of the hardest parts about leaving for college. Added to those difficult departing words is the burden of having to remind everyone when you’re going back, which only makes you more depressed about saying goodbye.
